I'm narrowing down my two target groups right now and I'd love some more input since we are all business moms here.

When starting your business, did you ever think of hiring a copywriter, or someone to help with your Website writing?

The reason I'm asking is that my site is getting tons of traffic and I have had a steady stream of clients. Things have slowed WAY down and I'm not getting the conversion like I was. I have heard from many moms in business that they won't hire a copywriter because:

No money to do so
Will write for themselves reguardless of how it sounds or turns out
have a friend, relative, etc who can do it for them
Never heard of a copywriter before
No idea where to find one

And, over and over, it's a money issue.

I really want to help moms in business and I am still torn between 2 main groups of business moms as my target. Perhaps I'm coming at this from the wrong angle.

Anyway, I'd love any input you have about this, or if you are a copywriter yourself, I'd love to chat with you too!

Thanks so much!

Lisa

I would have loved to hire a professional to write my website content but it was definitely a money issue. We had to prioritize what we would spend our limited funds on. I'm definitely a big fan of hiring out as much as possible, particularly when I don't have any experience in that area and it's not the purpose of my business.

I dont own my own business, I still work for the man, but here are a few ideas for cheaper alternatives:

Colleges and Universities may be able to help you locate graduate students who are looking for "internships" or perhaps you can work a reasonable rate with a student/graduate student. I have seen some people partner up with a professor and use the opportunity as a learning exercise for their students so they get real world experience doing actual copywriting. It is good for the students and for the business owner. Then the business owner would choose which copy to use and critique the students works in front of the class. BRUTAL but a great learning exercise for both sides as you would probably learn more about what you want IN and FROM a copywriter.

Check into people who write resumes. They tend to have an excellent background for copywriting and normally work part time or on an as needed basis for reasonable rates.

Another alternative is a creative writing class at an adult education facility or local college. They have people who write on a regular basis and or have experience in writing and may be able to offer assistance.

Dont forget trading. If you have something you can trade the copywriter, like ad space, or any other asset you can work a deal and help each other out.

I think if you want to do this and do it well but in a cost effective way you will have to network and be creative.

I also think a copywriter is very helpful. I believe if you want to come off polished a good copywriter will accomplish that for you, they will save you time and you will get your point made. A more polished point or writing will always increase your credibility. I think if you are really serious about taking your website to a higher level you would accomplish that more effectively with a copywriter.

I agree with notyouraveragemom when she says, "A more polished point or writing will always increase your credibility. I think if you are really serious about taking your website to a higher level you would accomplish that more effectiviely with a copywriter."

The first person I hired was a copywriter and it has paid off. I write the content for my site and she polishes it with our now, "company voice." My writing is very factual, authoritarian and sometimes has the "research blahs," if you know what I mean. Her writing is my content in a soother tone which resonates with the audience better. She his the third party and I think that is critical to success.

For content you are stuck on, hire someone. Post an ad at www.virtualvocations.com or ratracerebellion.com and you will probably find someone at a reasonable price. For content you can write, write it. Copywriters are easy to find these days. If you need more help, e-mail me!
