Does anyone keep a food diary?

I keep reading how writing down what you eat is great for staying in shape or losing weight -- does anyone do this? Have you found it useful?
(Here's the food diary is good for you article link, btw:

When my best friend and I were trying to get rid of our baby weight 3 years ago, instead of a food diary, we started e-mailing each other at the end of the day what each one of us ate.
That way, not only did we have to see it written in front of us, we had to send it to someone else. So it made it very hard to cheat, and we each were each other's cheerleader. And anyone will tell you if you are starting a new weight loss plan having a buddy really helps you to succeed.
We also would track our exercise as well, I was able to drop my 30 pounds in about a year, and have kept it off.
Because of that my program has become a way of life and I don't need to pay attention to everything I do now. And I have managed to keep it all off three years later.Flag as inappropriate Posted by LadyA on 25th August 2008 -
No, I don't keep a food diary. My first thought is: great idea, but when would most moms ever find time to update it?! I tend to stick to do-able daily "vows" - things like promising myself I'll fit in some exercise every day of the week or I'll eat mostly fruits and veggies on weekdays.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Diane on 26th August 2008
