Breast Feeding Exit Strategy

  • Hello BF mamas:

Could you please share your experiences in how you stopped breast feeding?

My son is 10 months old and I'd like to stop BFing by 11 months. We have 50 8-oz bags of stored frozen breast milk which will last him 10-15 days. However, we are planning to add a bit of whole milk to transition him from breast milk to whole milk by 12 months. So, our supply may last for 20 days or so.

How long did it take your supply to stop? I understand that I just increase the interval between feeds and my supply should go down? Any advice that you could give would be great! (I'd like it to NOT be a painful experience...

  • Hi KC,

That's how it worked for me. I BF my son for 11 months, and during the final month I just added and slowly increased formula and decreased nursing until we were left with only the before-bed feeding. Finally I swapped breast for bottle at bedtime and that was that. I had no engorgement...no discomfort. The less you nurse the less you'll produce. Good luck!

Oh, and kudos for the 50 bags of milk; I never seemed to get ahead in that department!
