H to all of you, Im new here..my question is how indispensable is a slow cooker in your life, how often do you use it? Say for example you need to turn it off at a certain time (after 8 hrs of cooking) and you are not back home till then( like if u need to turn it off at 5pm but u wont be back till 7) how do u go about it? Sorry , Im just starting to learn how to use a slow cooker, need some advice. Thank you very much and have a great day!

OMG, I love our slow cooker. Have split pea soup cooking in there now -- put the ingredients in at 8am, will be ready at 4.
We use it at least once a week -- I got a great cookbook at William Sonoma with slow cooker recipes and they are wonderful.
They run on a timer -- so it will turn off whenever you set it -- meaning that you can come home and the cooker turned off and your food is nice and warm in there.
Have you checked out Ordering Disorder blog on WIM? Chris shares her favorite slow cooker recipes there:

I'm a professional voice talent and mom to two fantastic girls. I run my own tiny company from home and find that juggling work at home and the kids, let alone the hubby and the house is a challenge every day. I'm also a yoga instructor which helps me get out of the house and clear my mind. I love everything I do (mom, work, wife, etc.) but am in a constant struggle for balance.

LOVE my slow cooker. Unfortunately it's from the Ming Dynasty so it doesn't have a timer. That's fine for when I'm here but not so much when I'm not, as you mentioned, Mia. So, if I need to, I use a timer that just plugs into the outlet and I plug the cooker into that. They are really cheap and work well for lights, too, for when you're out of town.
Welcome, Mia!

Hi Mia-
I have been slow cookin' all winter and am ready to put that sucka away! Ugh! Seriously though- once a week or so. Made a chicken last night. Throw in some chopped carrots, chopped celery, chopped onion, stick the birdie in there, can of chicken broth, salt and pepper and put it on low for 10-12 hours. Add a salad and there ya go! I pretty much do the same thing with pot roasts as well. Make mashed potatoes and gravy on the side.
Anyway, I am anxiously awaiting to use the grill without having to put our winter jackets on to do it!

Thanks so much for all your replies guys! My slow cooker doesn't have timer on it, apparently and I didnt know they make ones that has built in timers. Anyways I'll just buy one of those that you plug in as suggested by Mandy and I'm definitely gonna check out the ordering disorder website. Appreciate all your advice, have a great day!

Hi Everyone!
I am a mom to 3 boys ages 4, 7 and 10. We have a 4 year old Siberian Husky named Kali. My husband is an Owner Operator for a Moving Company and spends alot of time away on the road traveling all over the US. We moved to Colorado Springs, CO in Sept. 2007 from Boston, Ma. and we absolutely love it here. We live in a very rural area of the Springs and see cows and horses every day. The thing that we all miss about Ma. is family/friends and the Ocean. We also miss fresh Haddock...we haven't been able to find it here yet! I asked someone at the seafood counter if they had haddock and he looked at me like I had 3 heads! :) We used to eat it once a week when we lived back in Ma.
I was a stay at home mom until moving out here and found this great job after interviewing for almost 4 months! My days are very hectic since I am on my own when my husband is traveling and I am working full time. But I like it.

Hi Everyone!
I love my slow cooker. But unfortunately it does not have a timer. It's a nice oval shape though so it holds alot which is good since we have 3 boys with big appetites!
Now that I am back to work I am planning to invest in one with a timer. I use my crock pot at least once a week and would use it more if it had a timer. If I turn it on low at 7am my boys can shut it off for me when they get home from school at 3:30. That's what we've been doing for the past few weeks and it seems to work out good.
I keep all of my recipes online and have a crockpot cookbook of recipes I can post the link if you'd like.
