Dinner for a VERY busy sports schedule

Help! I don't know how to feed my kids without relying on fast food. Most of our evenings go like this. After School Nanny picks up the kids, gets them a snack, helps with homework, then starts shuttling them to various sports practices. At the height of our seasons, we will have five practices per week, and possibly 5 games per week...only two kids, can you believe it? Typically, my husband and/or I meet the Nanny at a practice to retrieve the kids...we leave the house in the morning and don't get home til after practice/games. Sometimes we split up because they are at two different places. Often we don't get back home until after 7:00 pm, then it's time to get the kids ready for bed soon after. We LOVE LOVE LOVE our sports teams and activities, but we don't often get a good healthy meal in the evenings.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Karla E on 27th August 2008

Try using the crockpot for some of your meals on the nights you will be home earlier. I often find myself making sandwiches to eat on the go either before or after practices. Something my son loves in tortillas & tacos so I wrap the taco meat, nacho cheese, chips & sour cream in a tortilla & grill for a few minutes on each side. Easy to eat cold or warm on the go. You could stuff them with chicken, turkey, lunch meat, salad, mashed potatoes & roast or anything else you can think of. I make them up in advance so all I have to do is grab what we need or if I'm not going home before practice I put them in the cooler. Grab some veggies & dip, chips, fruit cups, pudding, ect to go a long with it. Every kid loves a picnic at the park, or soccer field or back seat of a car....Flag as inappropriate Posted by Tammy on 27th August 2008

There are some great ideas over at the Ordering Disorder blog here at Work It, Mom -- the mom who writes it was dealing with hectic sports scheduling all summer, too, and has some wonderful (and yummy) solutions for dealing with dinnertime...Flag as inappropriate Posted by Lylah M.
