So, I know it's on everyone's mind. How are you saving money on gas?

This is what we're doing.
1. Cutting out unnecessary trips (or not driving to the far away grocery store for just one thing...even though they have better selection).
2. Driving slower. (We just had to drive out of state and ended up spending less than the 100 bucks that we budgeted because we drove under the speed limit).
3. We're saving up for a vespa (80 mpg sounds pretty good when my hubby has a 5 min commute).

I really want to take public transit, but I've never done that before in this city, and don't really know how to get started. Any tips on getting started? Anything special you need to know about taking the bus with a little one?

If taking a stroller, make sure it's easily collapsable. Otherwise, if you prepare the same as you would for the car (snacks, small toys, wipes), you should be fine.

As far as saving gas, we've cut down on outings a lot. That's usually the first consideration, is it worth the gas or should I wait until already out (ie to and from work) to run this errand.

I'm working at home. Saving $75/wk gas and $95/daycare. Plus I'm almost making as much as I was at work. So I'm really saving money. http://www.urlchop.com/uvw728

In cases where you absolutely must get in the car, they way you drive can have an impact on gas consumption:

1. Don't drive faster than 65mph
2. Don't tailgate the person in front of you. The more you press on the brakes unnecessarily, the more gas you waste.
3. Release the gas pedal as soon as you know you'll be coming to a stop. You won't have to brake as hard (aka. waste as much gas) when you approach the stop.
4. Park and walk instead of going through the drive-thru. Idling is a complete waste of gas, and you're not going anywhere!

Hope that helped.
