Group Discussions

What type of magazine subscriptions do you have? (this does count as reading afterall)

  • Let's see what type of magazines everybody in this group enjoys reading and we'll continue the conversation in sub-groups

  • I'll break the ice:
    - I like science magazines, and I have subscriptions at: Scientific American and Scientific American Mind. I used to have a subscription at Discover magazine, but I did not renew it (shame on me!)
    - I love movies and therefore I have a subscription at Entertainment weekly

  • Businessweek is the only mag I read regularly and keep on and off subscription. I've picked up Scientific American on occasion and really like it. I also will grab Shape, InStyle, and Runner's World.

Does reading the headlines of the tabloids during supermarket check-outs count? :)

  • I have a subscription to Martha Stewart Living, and my husband subscribes to Mental Floss (a trivia magazine) I read both pretty regularly.

  • I like Rolling Stone and Time Magazine. I think the only one we actually subscribe to is Consumer Reports (my husband's - way too boring for me).

The magazines that come as little surprises in the mail (that we don't subscribe to): Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, Popular Science, Entertainment Weekly, and Country Living. And that's just what we're getting now.

Years ago, my husband filled out an online form to receive Time free for a year and we started getting deluged with magazines (including FHM, Stuff and Maxim. I was so embarrassed).

Apparently, magazine publishers will send out free subscriptions to fulfill the subscription numbers that they give to advertisers. I never know what's going to show up in the mail!

  • Let's see... I subscribe to Writer's Digest, InStyle, Cooking Light and Organic Gardening. I pick up Women's Health whenever I notice it.

My husband gets Consumer Reports, too (yawn). :) Though I have to admit it's been helpful for me on occasion.

  • New Republic, The Economist, New Yorker, Fortune, Technology Review, Fast Company..... because they stimulate my mind

Saveur, Dwell, National Geographic Traveler, Us Magazine (but who the heck if Lauren Conrad?)... for the other 99% of the time :)

  • Wow, everyone reads such serious stuff! :S I don´t get much time to read, so I keep it light. And, since I live in Guatemala, my options are pretty limited, so I subscribe to digital magazines that come through Zinio.

The ones I subscribe to at the moment are Redbook and Women´s Day. If I could, I´d also read American Baby, Parents and Family Fun, plus craft magazines.

  • Oooh, I love magazines so I must chime in. I canceled my subscription to Real Simple because I found their simplify-your-life advice was actually complicating my life, much to my husband's amusement. :) In the interests of our new budget, I also canceled WonderTime, but I encourage others to try it. It's a wonderful parenting mag. Also canceled Cottage Living.

Now I get Smithsonian, Country Living, and Birds and Blooms. I do get Parenting mag too, but loathe it. :) I subscribe online to Consumer Reports and I obsessively check it out before making any big purchases. I don't get the paper version though.

Finally, although I don't get Scientific American now, I intend to subscribe in the future, partly for us and partly because I want our daughter to feel comfortable learning about the sciences. I just think that's so important for girls.

Michele: Yes, I look longingly at tabloid mags at the supermarket checkout but I'm too embarrassed to buy them and admit I care how Brad and Angelina's latest adoption is working out.

Mamajama: How cool - Mental Floss. Love it. I'm checking out the website right now.

  • I subscribe to Essence, Self, Family Fun, and Jet. I can read those cover to cover. Oh, I like Black Enterprise and Time.
