Halloween Costumes

  • First time mom here and I want to make my daughter her halloween costume for her first Halloween. I'm starting to plan now because II have limited free time (if any) and I'm not crafty to say the least. Any ideas where to get information for making costumes for a baby?

  • How crafty are you? I was just in a fabric store with my older daughter-- they have a *ton* of great patterns for costumes for babies. If you sew, that is! If not, check out Family Fun website-- they usually have great ideas for things like this. For my oldest daughter's first Halloween, I put her in some striped pj's and made a big felt collar (just involved cutting and gluing, no sewing!) and clown hat. Painted a red clown nose on her, and she was ready to go. I have to warn you, though, she *hated* being in a costume and got rid of the collar and hat within minutes. Some babies won't tolerate costumes, so beware! Good luck!

  • For my sons first Halloween I made a monkey costume they sell the patterns at walmart pretty cheap, if you dont sew an easy costume could be a Flintstones theme that's what we did last year(we were the rubbles haha). all you would have to do for your daughter is find a green dress or a green t-shirt a few sizes bigger cut the sleeves off, then hot glue patches of black faux fur on it (also available at walmart).Good luck to you!

  • I'm pretty crafty, but my daughter's first Halloween was one month after she was born and I was in no condition (much less mood) to create. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I wanted her to have a costume. I went to a consignment store (used kids clothes) and got the cutest little chili pepper costume for like 5 bucks. Talk about gently used - it was probalby only worn once.

  • Use fleece! With most fleece you don't even have to sew and what you do sew is very forgiving in terms of hiding bad lines. I love to sew and made a hugely complicated costume for my oldest - it matched her favorite doll. By using fleece I was able to save myself a lot of frustration because I didn't have a lot of time.

  • One year my neighbor dressed her two boys as ducklings. It was so cute! I don't remember exactly what she did, but here's instructions from ehow that seems similar. Sorry, there's no picture. If you have trouble finding a hooded sleeper, try a bitty warm-up suit with a hoodie and pants. Or a sleeper without a hood and some sort of cap. You could also attach a circle of white felt on the tummy for added detail. The beauty of this type of costume is it's minimal crafting, you can bundle him up under the sleeper for warmth, and you'll get more than one wearing out of it.

This modified-sweats-as-costume stage will last a few years. After that, lead your daughter towards costumes that can be used later as dress-up clothes. Buy them as large as you can get away with so you get many years of use out of them.

  • Baby Costumes can be really easy. Find an infant sweat suit and go from there. You can make a cat or a dog by sewing ears on or a lion by attaching ears and some mane around the hood.

The benefits are that it is easy to get on the baby, comfortable for them, and can even be worn again!

  • My now-preschooler was 11 days old for her first Halloween. I dressed her in white, wrapped her in fluffy white blanket, and told people who came to our door that she was a cloud.

I am not so much of the crafty...

  • For my son's first halloween, we went with a bat sweatshirt that we got at i Party, which I think cost $30 tops.

He was comfy and didn't know what the heck was going on...as time passes, the costumes get more and more complicated...last year he was Thomas the Train
