I was a stay-at-home mom for 7 years, and then I got divorced. I finished my English MA shortly after. I have worked as a special ed teacher, a college instructor, and an assistant director of a research institute for a medical school.
I returned home to work as a fulltime medical writing and editing consultant, two years ago. I have clients across the U.S. and Canada, and also blog for ParentDish, TV Squad, and The Life Sciences blogs at Weblogs Inc.
In the past six years, I have completely re-invented myself. I am eager to see what happens next.

Oh dear. I get up... later than 8 a.m. Unless it's the school year and I have to get up and take my kids to school.
On the other hand, I often see what the world looks like at 2:00 a.m.
Am I the only one who keeps vampire's hours?

I am the co-founder & CEO of Work It, Mom! This is my first stint as a full-time entrepreneur and it's the most thrilling and scary thing I've ever done.
Before launching Work It, Mom! I slaved away in the dark world of venture capital.

I WISH I could wake up at 8 - my daughter is up way before then. I get up around 6 or so, try to go to the gym or for a walk. At night, if I am in bed before midnight, it's big win for the day. So can we call this semi-vampire hours?

Yes, you can be a semi-vampire.
I think you must do better than I do on very little sleep. My problem seems to be that I either need a lot of sleep, or I end up with terrible insomnia.
I would love only to need 6 hours of sleep a night. Then I would have more time for things like painting or hobbies-- but as it is, I have a set of unopened paints in my studio, and I think about them when I take naps.

I have three kids, five stepkids. I'm a qualified teacher, I've taught prenatal and parenting classes, and now I run a home daycare.
I love my work, but the time has come to make a career shift. I love being self-employed, and I'd love to make my living writing. How will I accomplish this?
I'm finding out as I go!

Soooooo not a vampire. I'm in bed - and usually sound asleep - by 10 p.m. Up at 5:30 or 6:00 - and no alarm clock.
I love, love, love that quiet couple of hours in the morning. Keeps me sane.

I'm married, 11 years, to a funny guy we like to call HalfBrainBoy (hey, he picked it!) after he had surgery in 2001 to remove a brain tumor which also removed a bit of brain matter... He's doing beyond great.
The years following have become my "everything I can do to raise funds for ACS and individuals who are battling cancer" period. A few years back, my beautiful SIL (although I call her my sister) took her incredible truffle recipe and said, "Let's make truffles and sell them as a fund raiser." That year our Relay For Life team became a Platinum team, raising over $11K. We knew we were onto something with those truffles. So last year, we went into business.

Weighing in here WEEKS later than the original post. Heh.
But you KNOW I keep vampire hours. Of course, my child no longer lives at home and my work is totally voluntary and on my own terms...
So, I'm building a website now and my type A personality is freaking out completely because I want it to be totally perfect or nobody can see it. Doesn't work for a business if it never goes live, eh? Guess I better get over it already.
Think I'll be on vampire hours tonight putting it together. Wish me luck.
