I'm a professional voice talent and mom to two fantastic girls. I run my own tiny company from home and find that juggling work at home and the kids, let alone the hubby and the house is a challenge every day. I'm also a yoga instructor which helps me get out of the house and clear my mind. I love everything I do (mom, work, wife, etc.) but am in a constant struggle for balance.

LOVE my job. Being a voice talent has very few downsides. The toughest being that i have to take care of my voice and a cold (or too much yelling at a basketball game) can really have a negative impact on my work. However, the upsides are plentiful including that it's so unique it's a great conversation piece and networking tool!

I am the very proud mother of a too-cute-for-words one year old son! My job has me commuting an hour each way, but I do work from home one day a week and get to see hubby and son as soon as they get home! My hubby takes our son to/from the onsite daycare where he works and is able to spend an hour or two bonding (i.e. wrestling)before i get home! :)

Currently, my job is very stressful and negative, and one that I will hopefully be getting out of someday soon. I have started the process of trying to do a career change, but it is very nerve-wracking leaving something that is a guarantee, to trying to find something different, that might not be as stable. I'm a bit out of my comfort zone with this, but it's something I feel I need to do.... if for nothing else, to keep what little sanity I have left. For now, I take baby steps towards the change. Eventually I'll move on to strides, until I reach a career that has what I'm looking for!
Is anyone else out there in this sort of position???

I am the co-founder & CEO of Work It, Mom! This is my first stint as a full-time entrepreneur and it's the most thrilling and scary thing I've ever done.
Before launching Work It, Mom! I slaved away in the dark world of venture capital.

J25J31 - I can really relate to leaving something stable behind. I've done it 3x in my career when I completely changed gears - each time it was terrifying. I've written openly here about the process of leaving my well-paying job (and being the main breadwinner) to start Work It, Mom! as a company - it's been 6 months and I am still very much out of my comfort zone
What type of work are you thinking about for your career change?

I'm unhappy with my job. I'd love to be able to take the next year off to rethink what I want to do with the rest of my life and be home with my daughter. I'd LOVE to start a small business and actually have a store of some sort and be able to bring her with me. I don't have the finances to start a business. I've thought about everything from a bakery to a children's 2nd hand store to a craft store. I love seeing different people everyday. Where I'm working, I sit in a cubicle with my face in two computer screens and talk to basically the same 4 or 5 people everyday (all men at least 20 years older than I am) so I am aching for something more. I just don't know where to start.

I am ridiculously proud of the fact that I get to raise two really amazing kids. I am single by design and wouldn't have it any other way. Professionally I have accomplished a lot both in the corporate world and running my own business. I know what it is like to be unemployed and under-employed. Personally, I am a diehard optimist, terminally perky and a hardcore believer in personal accountability.

Marcia...sounds like you have some BIG DREAMS for a great career! I'd suggest starting small though. Have you ever worked in retail before? I think before opening a store I'd want to be sure I had experience working in that environment under the management of someone else! Also...do you have any mentors? People that are doing something you would be interested in that you can talk to? Finding mentors, networking with people in industries that interest you and getting your foot in the door are great ways to get started down developing the career of your dreams!!

I am friends with the owner of a children's 2nd hand store out here. I'm welcome to volunteer to help her anytime I want to (accept I volunteering doesn't pay the bills). I would be happy with being an upper employee in one of those types of businesses. I just need something that puts me in different situations and lets me see people!! The walls of my cube are pretty dull and makes for a long, boring work day. The pay is awesome but I want so much more out of working than a good paycheck. I want something that I can wake up and be like 'alright let's get to work!' instead of 'ughh it's that time ALREADY!' and then watching the clock tick away the entire time.
