Most people believe that as long as you have a computer, printer, desk and chair, you have a successful

home office. Well, I believe that there is a bit more to it than these items in order to have an ongoing productive home office. The importance remains in realizing a few more things to help you on the path to the optimal home office.

1) Find a business you enjoy. If you don’t have the passion for what you are selling, how do you expect you customers to want what you are selling. This applies to products and/or services. Always remember that your outgoing attitude about what you are doing is easily transparent to the customer.

2) Allow for mistakes. When you make a mistake, the best thing to do is learn from it. Don’t dwell on the mistake, however, looking forward to the solution. Also, find and create an improvement process or a check & balance system to implement in order to not make the mistake again.

3) Separate bank accounts. Have one back account strictly for business expenses and income and have another just for personal expenses. Do not combine the two accounts. By taking this action, it saves a multitude of time at the end of the year, when tax season approaches. (Great tip - If you use online banking, you may not need to even leave your house to transfer money from one account to another!)

4) Create a proper work space. Ensure the space that you use for work is away from other distractions such as TV, radios, or outside noise. Keep in mind what you will need in order to conduct business such as phone, fax, copier, computer, software, files, etc. Make a checklist of all the things you will need and try to get them at one time so you can set up everything.

5) Have faith in yourself. You can work from home. It may take awhile to get used to it, but don’t give up. Seek out others who have been working from home longer and ask lots of questions. There is a lot of scammers out there but trust yourself to know when you are not being treated properly.

6) Research. Before you jump into something that seems too good to be true - ask your friends, business associates and do checks about the company before you sign on the dotted line. This way you can be sure you have secured yourself a good company to work with to provide a comfortable situation.

Keep in mind that working at home takes more than just having a computer, fax machine and chair. There are several things you have to think about thoroughly before diving into the work at home arena but it can be done and done successfully.
