Every January 1, more than half of us say we need to lose weight. Odd, then, that New Year's Eve parties are overflowing with calorie-laden cocktails and greasy hors d'oeuvres. Start 2008 on the right note with these healthful and festive tips.

1. Choose an ultra brut

They are low in sugar and calories. Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut Champagne has 65 calories per glass, nearly 50% less than sweeter varieties. Sprinkle in pomegranate seeds, raspberries, or blueberries for an elegant antioxidant boost.

2. Serve figure-friendly finger foods

We love stuffed cherry tomatoes: Toss 3 cups of baby greens with 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Cut the tops off a pint of cherry tomatoes. Scoop seeds out of the tomatoes and stuff with greens. Or, hand out bite-size squares of a whole grain pizza like Kashi's Frozen Mediterranean.

3. Keep the sweets petite

Ditch dessert? Never! Instead, prep your favorite recipe in miniature: The smaller the serving size, the less likely you are to overdo it (for our favorite bite-size holiday sweets, visit prevention.com/holidayrecipes). Or, stretch the rich flavor of dark chocolate by using it as a garnish for fruit like strawberries, banana slices, or melon chunks.
