As a work-from-home mom and an entrepreneur, one of the most difficult things I have faced is balancing all the different hats I wear throughout the day.

I remember when I first began working from home: I was jumping between the computer, the laundry, cooking meals, cleaning the house, taking kids to school and activities, and being a wife.  It seemed that I was always hopping from one thing to another.  I also found that nothing I did was accomplishing anything -- I was merely spinning my wheels.

I recently remembered that old saying, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well."  I realized that I was very busy doing a lot of different things, but I was not able to do any of them well.

By scheduling my work day around my other responsibilities, I have finally found a way that works for me.  I have set certain times during the day and evening when I am "at work."  During this time, I don't do anything else but concentrate on my business. These times are usually when the kids are at school or have gone to bed.

I also set certain times of the day when I am just working around the house, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc. Early mornings and afternoons/early evenings are with the kids, helping with homework, and dealing with after school activities. I keep all of my "appointments" in an appointment book for each day.

By setting appointments for certain activities and work throughout the day, it is much easier to stay on task with what I am doing, which is making me more productive and successful in all areas of my life.

Good article. This is so true. And many people have different priorities, so its important to sit down and write out what yours are and that will help you with scheduling. Your frustrations originally are experienced by many, so its great you discovered this early on and made it important immediately. Your personal life and your business will prosper for this new direction you are taking.
I have found it helpful to schedule work time too. It seems that everyone else (husband and kids) thinks I am available all day just because I'm home. I love the flexibility of being able to schedule things on my time but it is easy to get distracted with all the things that could be done around the house.
