It may be the shortest month of the year, but there are plenty of things to do in February. Here's a quick list of things to keep in mind this month!

Feb. 1-7

Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day, and we'll all be on tenderhooks waiting to hear whether we're in for an early spring or six more weeks of winter (Spring, we've got our fingers crossed!). Many people are gearing up for Superbowl XLII on the Feb. 3 and Mardi Gras onFeb. 5 -- you can even watch events in New Orleans unfold via webcam at Mardigras.com. Do you have party plans of your own? Hit the supermarket early to stock up on treats and avoid last-minute crowds (and stress).

Chinese New Year is on the Feb. 7; this year we welcome the Year of the Rat. It's a great opportunity to introduce your kids to another culture. Plan a celebration of your own: make a simple plum blossom tree, try some traditional Chinese New Year's treats, and learn about your Chinese zodiac animal and what it signifies.

Feb. 8-14

Of course, many people are getting ready for Valentine's Day, which is at the end of this week. If you're going somewhere, we hope you've made travel and/or dinner reservations well in advance -- hotels and restaurants fill up early and quickly. Did you wait until the last minute? Don't worry... check BedandBreakfast.com to see if there are any local B&Bs near you with last-minute availability, or try your favorite restaurant early in the evening or late at night. Another idea: Ratchet up the romance level at home after the kids are in bed by lighting a few candles, putting on your favorite music, and sharing a delicious and decadent fondue with your sweetheart. Not seeing anyone special? Throw a dessert party for your friends and family, and take the time to enjoy the sweeter things in life!

President's Day is next week, and it's a federal holiday. Your kids will probably have the day off from school, even if you have to work, so make sure you've lined up childcare.

Feb. 16-21

February is Black History Month, and there's much more to it than what's taught in schools. Take a journey through history with your kids using The Biography Channel's interactive timeline, and check out the 101 facts they've compiled -- it's fascinating.

Feb. 23-29

This year is a Leap Year, which means that we've got 29 days this month instead of the usual 28. What will you do with your "extra" day? Try to find something that will lift your spirits -- February is one of the most difficult months of the year for many people, especially those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the hypothalamus due to the shortening of daylight hours and the lack of sunlight in winter; common symptoms include extreme fatigue, listlessness, apathy, and depression, among other things, that disappear abruptly come Spring. If you've felt like this for two or more winters, please talk to a medical professional as soon as possible.
