Eating lunch during a busy work day can be a pretty dismal affair. Fast food, something zapped in the microwave, or a costly restaurant meal are all less-than-ideal choices, especially if you're trying to save money or eat healthy. But I recently read about an idea which solves all of these problems -- an office lunch club!

The idea is simple -- coworkers take turns providing a midday meal for the group to share! If your work place has a reasonably equipped kitchen, your first step is covered. Next, recruit a few coworkers who share your interest in freshly prepared lunches. Between yourselves, decide how many times each week the "club" will provide meals and which days will be an "on your own" day. So for example, if eight colleagues want to participate and Fridays ae going to be an "on your own" day, each member will cook a meal for 8 once every other week.

Some points to keep in mind:

1.) Be aware of food allergies and strong food dislikes in the group.

2.) Pool the paper goods (or have members bring their own)

3.) Choose a time frame during which lunch will be available, since you may not all be able to eat at the same time.

4.) Keep an eye on portion sizes -- make sure there's enough for everyone.

And this is probably the best part: As a group, you can decide what type of cuisine you'd like to eat! Will you pick ethnic themes? Entrees selected from Weight Watchers, Cooking Light, or South Beach? Will you occasionally offer vegetarian dishes? Set goals and let your lunch club help you accomplish them. Is weight loss a goal? More varied lunch menus? Camaraderie among staff? Saving money? Let these considerations guide you! And remember to stay flexible -- adjustments may be necessary as the group takes shape!

I just love the number of possibilities associated with forming a lunch club! Terrific food and friendship are sure to brighten even the dullest work day. Enjoy!

I would absolutely love to do this if I were not terrified of some of the food I may be forced to eat. I can picture at least 2 dishes of "beef-a-roni" LOL!!

Hi Susan, This had never occurred to me. What a good idea. Sort of like a mid-day mini-party. I guess it might work best in small workplaces where everyone gets along well and has similar food likes/dislikes!
