Working from (a Happy) Home

I had to take care of my family in order to take care of my business

I work from home and have three children, ages 6, 3, and 7 months. I began staying home 2 1/2 years ago when my mother-in-law and I couldn't get along (and she was our babysitter). Working wasn't worth it.

Once I was home, I needed to have something to do. I love to take care of my kids, but I needed something more. Anyway, I found something that I can do where I can earn a residual income, and make our family and environment safer and healthier. I love doing what I do, but my husband was having a hard time with it.

I had put the house last, so it was messy -- dishes weren't getting done, laundry wasn't getting done, and our relationship was falling apart. This is what I did to find balance in my home:

1.) Put family first. I thought that putting my business first would help it to move along better. While that may be true, I knew that I was ignoring the work that I had to do in our home to keep it a happy place. So I designated time in half-hour increments that I would dedicate only to housework or only to be with my son or only to my business. It is absolutely amazing the things I can get done!

2.) Show hubby attention and affection. Before, when my husband came home, it was a short "hi," a kiss, and I was busy sending emails and making phone calls. Needless to say, this did not make him a happy guy. So now, I make sure that I hug him, kiss him, and tell him some good things that happened that day when he walks in the door.

3.) Stay away from negatives. When hubby comes home, I don't start complaining about things that went wrong that day. Instead, I start off with good things that the kids did, maybe, or something good that I did for him. I have put sticky notes on the door with comments from the kids about something they want to tell him or something cool that they did. He has responded very well to those!

These very small things have made world of difference in our relationship and the attitudes in my household. I love being able to be home with my children, and also being able to work from home has been a blessing for us. It takes a lot of self-discipline to make it work, but it can be done -- I'm living proof!

I hope this helps some of you out there!
