What makes some people more successful than others?
Oprah Winfrey once stated: “I don’t know if anybody really sky rockets to success. I think that success is a process. And I believe that my first Easter speech, at Kosciusko Baptist Church at the age of 3 1/2, was the beginning. And that every other speech, every other book I read, every other time I spoke in public was a building block. By the time I first sat down to audition in front of a television camera and somebody said, ‘Read this,’ what allowed me to read it so comfortably was the fact that I had been doing it a while.”
Donald Trump said: “If you really want to succeed, you’ll have to go for it every day, like I do. The big time isn’t for slackers. Keep up your mental stamina and remain curious.”
Purpose
OK, OK, I hear you. You’re saying, "But why is purpose so important anyway?" Purpose is what gives us direction and motivates us to keep going when things get tough. Purpose is your "Why." It’s that deep feeling that fuels you into action. It’s that drive that says, "I’m going forward no matter what. I have something to accomplish and, by golly, I’m going to do it." It’s what brings meaning and deep satisfaction to your life.
So now that we know that purpose is very important to achieving success, how do you discover your purpose? Well, let’s start with how you want others to remember you. What qualities or characteristics do you want them to remember about you? For example, I want my children to see me as a mother who always believed in them, encouraged them, and empowered them to be the best that they could be. I want my husband to remember me as a loving supportive wife and also someone who always inspired him to be his best. I want my church to remember me as someone who was always willing to help out and as someone who inspired and empowered others. Look at what seems to be the common theme among your statements; that common theme points to your purpose. It’s what really excites you and it is where your natural gifts lie.
