Choose your keywords carefully

You have probably heard the words “anchor text” before and wondered, "What is that?" Well, anchor text is simply the words that you see on the webpage linking it to another page. If you have ever seen the words "Click Here" highlighted and/or underlined, then you have seen anchor text in action.

Google and other search engines put value on anchor text in their algorithm (nice mathematical data) because keywords are regularly used as a way to indicate what is being linked to in conjunction with your site. You can create anchor text very easily created in wordpress or other blogging platforms just by highlighting the text, pressing the link button in the administrative area, and inputting the required URL.

An important reminder: When linking to a site, be sure to use the keywords relevant for that site; that way, you not only make it easier for your readers by showing them what to expect from the linked-to site, and you also increase the power of your link to the linked-to site.

Make sure also to think carefully about keywords when linking to other pages on your site so you can also gain from the power of anchor text.

Hmmm, I never knew the words with the link were so important. Thanks!

Well, I think I will now stop making links that suggest that readers pop "over here" -- with "over here" being the link. Obviously I am NOT taking full advantage of my words!

Now I'm curious: what are the relative strengths of outgoing links vs. incoming? Which are more valuable to me, or are both good at increasing my visibility (and SEO)?
