Embrace Imbalance

Words from a far-wiser woman than I

Every day we reschedule our time, trying to make our days longer in hopes of fitting both our professional needs and our family needs into one nice and neat package. Personally, I’ve spent my entire working life trying to find the hidden key to the lock which holds the ultimate answer to the question which seems to constantly nag at me.

Will I ever find balance between my home and career?

Well friends, I’ve found my answer. It came to me like a hot flash, only without the sweat. As I sat yesterday in my little chair while I attending a Women’s Conference, the answer hit me straight in the face. The program leader who was talking to us about balance wrote on the overhead projector the words “Embrace Imbalance” (I told you, she's far wiser than I!) and it was as if I had never seen those two words before in my life! Can those two words be put together? Will the planet somehow fall off of its axis? In my ongoing quest to find this balance (the one that usually all working moms on TV have), I never thought that I could (say it with me now) Embrace the Imbalance!

Call it what you want, go with the flow, roll with the punches, don’t sweat the small stuff, drink with the best of them (oops, wrong topic!), it's all the same concept. It really is a novel idea. It’s so wonderful because I’ve been doing it for so long but never recognizing the fact that sometimes things aren’t going to balance between my work and home life and I may never get equal parts of both, but life goes on and for the most part the planets are still properly aligned.

Just realizing that things may not be balanced took a load of stress off of my shoulders. Although this answer may not be the right answer for everyone, it certainly has helped me realize the obvious, you can only do so much with your time, balance it as well as possible and the -- drink with the best of them! (Or roll with the punches, go with the flow...)

The concept I have imbraced is HARMONY.
To me the concept of harmony make so much more sense...it has highs and lows, the tempo changes but it all blends together for a wonderful life oringinal song

Actually, this is very nice to hear.

It reminds me that sometimes I'm super Mom - and I'm sometimes I feel like I've ignored my children forever (not true, of course, but feels like it).

You know, as long as I can run 4-5 times a week, I feel in balance, no matter how much I have accomplished with everything else. And then there are some weeks where you just have to ride the wave because life is crazy with work and kids and trying to fit in the things that make you feel whole, but it's better than not trying.

I love the idea of Embrace Imbalance but now I have a question: where specifically do you feel out of balance? Do you feel like you aren't spending enough time with your family? Like you don't have enough time to clean the house & do laundry? Where do you feel the most "pain"? I'm just curious because while I always have a PILE of stuff to do (at home and at work) I don't ever have a feeling that I am out of balance.
I think you've made a great point in your article. It's really important to realize and accept what we can and can't do. Contstantly trying to reach the impossible will catch up with us.
