Molly Maid, the leader in residential cleaning, is encouraging women ditch the gym and instead burn calories by cleaning the house. Trading your gym bag for a vacuum and mop won’t only make your floors sparkle, but can help to achieve a better figure along the way.

With summer swimsuit season just around the corner, many people are getting a head start on their workout routine. With the tips that Molly Maid suggests, saving time and money on a gym membership is something that busy homeowners can certainly take advantage of right now.

Below are some of the tips Molly Maid offers to help shed a few pounds while making your house beautiful:

Warm Up – Dusting: Dusting works all major muscles, especially quads and glutes. When reaching up to those high, hard-to-reach places, stretch thoroughly to get those muscles working and include a few step-ups on your stairs to get the blood pumping. Alternate your legs; after one minute leading with one, change to lead with the other for one minute.

Cleaning windows: Clean up and down your windows and incorporate squats to boost the calories burned. Make sure to stretch up to reach the top of your window.

Polishing windows: Once windows are cleaned with the squat technique, use a dry cloth in each hand to dry and polish the windows. Rotate both hands one way to polish and change direction after 10 rotations.

Cleaning kitchen work surface: Stand in center of the work surface, hold cloth in each hand and stretch as far as possible in each direction to clean.

Vacuuming downstairs: Do some walking lunges across the length of the room every time you step forward, moving the vacuum backwards and forwards.

Scrubbing the floor:  Start on hands and knees, hold sponge/scrubbing brush with both hands. Holding your stomach in, reach forward as far as possible and then return to starting position. Keep stomach engaged throughout, relax neck.

Cleaning the bathroom: Shoulder press against bathroom wall. Facing the wall, with both hands high against the wall lean into the wall, bending your elbows and then extend back to starting position. 10 repetitions then rest, then do another 10.

Molly Maid Maid, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is one of three service companies under Service Brands International. The residential cleaning franchise, ranked number one in the United States, was founded in 1979 and began franchising in 1984. Currently, over 450 Molly Maid units are operating in the United States alone, with an additional 300 operating throughout Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, England and Portugal. Molly Maid has consistently ranked well in Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 rankings, currently at number 81. Molly Maid has also been the recipient of numerous awards for entrepreneurialism, software innovation and humanitarian causes, including the Ms. Molly Foundation, which collects money and goods for safe houses and shelters for victims of domestic violence.
