Would I Work If I Didn't Have To?

A Speak Your Mind essay

I don't work for the money. I work outside the home for other reasons, including:

- The opportunity to pee when I have to without talking out loud, reminding my daughter that "mommy is almost done and will be there in a minute."

- The chance to eat lunch in the middle of the day, as opposed to when it is convenient.

- The interaction with other adults - despite the fact that many of them are less intelligent and way less fun than my one-year-old.

- It is less work than being at home.

Actually, while these are meant to be humorous, they are all true. I work because I couldn't be a stay-at-home mom. I respect stay-at-home-moms more than I can convey in words. I just don't have it in me to be stimulating all the time.

When a SAHM friend of mine told me that she tried to do activities with her son that aren't just "ways of passing the time" I gave her what I can only imagine was a dumbfounded look. I don't even know what she means! Of course I read to my daughter and play outside with her and take her for walks (and on errands) when I am home with her, but I also schedule these around nap and meal times, waiting for the next daily milestone. I wouldn't know how to do it any other way.
