Toiletries

I've tried almost everything out there. Jason's Sunblock has no parabens and is my favorite sunscreen. Avalon Organics makes great baby butt balm (no petroleum products is what to look for), thought I've been wanting to make my own (and this recipe looks promising). You can also by 100-percent zinc oxide at some drugstores, and this could be added for extra protection.

valon's massage oil is also great, although plain olive oil (not extra virgin) or grapeseed oil is just as good for a new baby. In fact, olive oil is the cure of choice for cradle cap.

BIn terms of shampoos and such, California Baby is the Starbucks of organic toiletries -- reliable, available, and consistently good (although probably overpriced). I vascillate on buying these pricey things, but after reading studies like this one, on chemical and absorption concerns, I think they're worth the price.

  • Just an update -- I have tried to make the herbal baby balm on the link: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/bathcrafts_candles/77592
It's lovely, but I would do a few things different:
-- put the herbs in some cheesecloth or something, the filter-over-mesh straining was messy and time consuming
-- use 2X as much sweet almond oil, what I made was much too thick and hard

  • In September 2007 I got rid of all the mainstream commercial brands and am 100% Melaleuca. Gone are the days of wearing rubber gloves and face masks to clean. Gone are the days of checking out labels to see what dangers lurk within. Melaleuca has over 350 products - I now do one stop shopping for all my consumerable products, delivered right to my door.

    Visit www.Melaleuca.com for further details.

  • Hey, thanks for these wonderful suggestions. I switched to eco-friendly cleaners, so it's great to get suggestions about what other people are using. I keep hearing people sing the praises of plain old vinegar. I must give it a try. Thrifty, too!! I'm with you on the baby toiletries, as well. The more I hear about the big name brands, the worse it gets.
