At the grocery store, I walked past the pink-and-white Valentine puppy, but I did stop and purchase two grocery-store gift cards for the family of the policeman, and my children packed a box of snacks and Valentine messages for his children. I sent a check to the Holliston soldier with a thank you note from my family, and my children and I sent a few Valentines to a recent stroke victim.

In addition to -- or instead of -- buying another cute stuffed animal or overpriced roses, how about buying a bag of groceries for the food pantry, new clothes and toiletries for a local charity, or sending a Valentine message to someone who desperately needs one? It will be appreciated far more a box of drug-store candy or flowers that’ll die in a few days. We don’t need a pat on the back, just the warm feeling in our hearts that we’ve reached out and touched someone in need.
