  • I'm ambivalent about the ideas in this post. While I do like the idea of a maternity leave as a professional sabbatical - a time to lie fallow for a while, a time to develop oneself, this approach suggests to me that the child is a mere hiccup in one's professional career, rather than the life-changing event (not to mention entire other human being) they in fact are.

Still, it's a well-written article, with provocative ideas worth considering. I'm sure that women who get an actual maternity leave (rather than the 4 - 6 work hiatus pretending to be mat. leave that too many American women receive) could put these ideas to productive use.

  • It is nice to read articles as such. I am a working mother and came back to work after 3 months of bedrest and baby. After coming back noticed my peers have moved a head of me and for the first few weeks I was lost and feeling bad for my career loss. I have been talking to my manager to get opprutunities like my peers to take up more responsibilities. Right now it looks like a dead zone to me. This has prompted me to look outside the company for better positions. This article perfectly describes what I have been doing to advance my career after I had a baby
