The Chunky Girl’s Motivation to Get Moving

Hopes for the Gym-A-Phobe

I started off with a treadmill, it was boring. Even while trying to watch TV, treadmills to me are boring. Maybe it’s the repetitiveness of walking without going anywhere, I’m not sure, but I just get utterly bored. Bikes are the same, except now I’m bored while sitting. So, I opted for the elliptical machine. I absolutely love my elliptical. Am I still standing in one general area going through the motions of walking (actually, slightly jogging at my regular speed) and not really going anywhere? Yes. Am I still in one room where nothing really exciting is going on? Yes. So, why can I go through this and not get bored basically doing the same thing I was doing on both the treadmill and the stationary bike? Well, because I can actually feel myself working out. My arms are moving and I can feel it in my shoulders and upper arms. My legs are really getting a workout without the jarring of running that leaves me sore for hours. And the kicker of it all is that within ten minutes of being on my elliptical, I am already breaking a good sweat, and no one is giggling at me!

So with all of that being said, and yes I know it’s a lot, find a good piece of fitness equipment and get on it and get moving. Don’t be afraid to grunt and sweat and cry while you’re working out because you are in your own home and there’s no one to impress but yourself. You should be proud of yourself for making the effort and taking the time to push yourself into an asthma attack, with no one to show off for!

And just remember while you are sweating through that old concert t-shirt and gym shorts, there’s a chunky girl over in South Carolina that’s right there with you, cheering you on!

  • Eighteen pounds is SO do-able. You can do it! I reached my goal weight - 25 pounds in four and a half months - through a combination of 3-times-a-week gym, long walks on the weekend, and Weight Watchers. I've been trying to lose it for over a decade, and only seeing the pounds go steadily on, despite my efforts. But when I put the eating and the activity together - ta-dah! - steady weight loss. 25 pounds in 4.5 months is only slightly more than a pound a week. I'm thrilled -- and I am GOING to keep it off!

    You can, too. You GO!
