Looking professional and pretty during pregnancy

Yes, it can be done!

When you've suddenly morphed into a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon, it can be difficult to find clothes that (a) look like clothes and not like something Boy Scouts would camp under and (b) make you feel at least halfway between human and that-thing-the-cat-dragged-in. So what are pregnant women to do? Especially pregnant women who have to get dressed at some point during the day and actually go out into the world?

Well, here are a few tips that might make your life easier. I've been pregnant two years in a row now, and some of these have been imparted to me by other moms, some have been learned through simple trial-and-error, and still others have been learned by watching other pregnant women commit some unfortunate fashion faux pas that I am glad to have avoided.

1.) Wear black, and wear it a lot! Black is naturally slimming, and will hide all those nasty little "pooches" that creep up on us during pregnancy. Those little saddlebag looking things on your back? No one will be able to tell they're even there with a well-fitted black shirt. Of course, material and fit are very important, which brings me to...

2.) Buy clothes in the size you are now. Don't buy for the future, or thinking that you'll "grow into" those pair of pants that sag in the butt or the stomach. When you get to that size, you can go shopping again (isn't this why you have a job in the first place?). Buy clothes that hug your curves and accentuate your assets.

3.) Choose soft, clingy fabrics like matt jersey and knits. These will drape beautifully over your stomach and breasts, and really make you look voluptuous.

4.) Wear 3/4 sleeve tops and dresses whenever you can. Really. You might not notice because you see yourself in the mirror everyday, but your arms have been growing little pieces of flab behind your back. Do this simple experiment for me: stand in front of a mirror, lift your arm up, and wave. Does Mrs. Flab wave back, and keep waving even after your arm has stopped? Time to invest in those 3/4 sleeves.

5.) Hair, makeup and accessories! These will be your best friend until the baby comes (and even for a little while after). They take the focus away from any excessive weight gain, and put the focus on themselves. No one's going to notice that you're waddling if you have a fabulous handbag or a gorgeous pair of shoes on. And if your hair is shiny and well-styled, you're going to feel like a million bucks, too. Which really, is the most important thing of all.

  • I truly wish I had these tips when I was pregnant -- I looked horrible. I was really cheap about buying new clothes and in retrospect, a few quality pieces would have been great.
