.) Build upon toys your kids have, making them new again. Think about new pieces to Brio trains, Lego sets that extend the creativity of what you already have, or a new game for the DS/Wii/XBox you bought last year.
.) Gift cards for older kids. iTunes cards are always a hit. Clothing store cards are also perfect for the fashionista. They'll like these better than what you would buy them. Plus, you keep the cost to your budget and teach them to budget.
.) Bake your Christmas cookies for the family on Christmas. It's a good time to get the whole family involved and do something together.
.) Do something. Go for a walk through the woods. Play football. If it's snowing, take out the sleds.
.) Have the kids make decorations. Give them a room that they can decorate. Let them bake dough ornaments for the tree.
.) Think of others. If you have a high quality toy that your child has outgrown, consider giving it to a friend. My daughter, who is 9, had a wooden doll house with all the furniture. It needed a bit of paint to freshen it up, but was perfect for my neighbor's daughter who is 5. My neighbor was thrilled to get it and her daughter is going to love it.
What tips do you have to make ends meet this holiday?
