If we are to change Corporate America, we need to start by examining our own belief systems. Women can be quick to point out the inequalities others bestow upon them-but how can they expect anything different if they are guilty of similar behavior?
Working with many women leaders and rising stars, I have heard comments such as “I don’t believe in that women stuff” or “I don’t want to go to events for women-it is too soft and I don’t want to be singled out as handicapped.” If I am hearing these words, so are others-male and female. What message does this send? I don’t want to be part of the group that I biologically belong to and will discard it to fit in with the majority.
What I have found in my research is that women who are influential and create powerful impact examine their own belief system, extinguish behaviors that may reinforce stereotypes and operate from a position of strength even if they may be perceived as unconventional. They are aware of the narrow band that exists for them-they are not in denial-but look to navigate the maze, believing that they can-it is just a matter of how.
In looking at the recession as a time to make significant changes and be part of the revolution what would you like to contribute or influence? This is a time to innovate and do things differently than before. You have the opportunity to create a new paradigm that will be more effective. What is the first thing you would like to change? What obstacles may get in the way? What will you do when you become frustrated or thwarted? Identify individuals you can count on for internal and external support as you navigate the maze in front of you.
