Corporate America didn't work for me

Maybe it's not right for you, either

I never, ever, considered having my own business.

But when I finally figured out what I wanted to be doing it happened to be starting my own business helping others figure out what they want to be doing with their careers and lives.  As I learned what it meant to be a coach and learned how coaches usually work for themselves, it all made sense to me.  Of course I wanted to work for myself!

Why hadn’t I thought of that before?  (Picture me giving myself a V8 hit over the head)

It doesn’t matter why I didn’t think about it.  The point is that I now knew!

How about you? Have you been trying to fit yourself into a job title or job function and failing?

Don’t say you can’t start a business because you don’t know how to get started.  And you can’t say you prefer the security of a paycheck.  Your paycheck was never a guarantee and now we’re seeing that play out all around us.

Some signs that you might want to go off on your own:

1.) You crave freedom.

2.) You have a calling that no job out there seems to satisfy.

3.) You like the idea of creating your own economy and not riding someone else’s roller coaster.

4.) You can *see* yourself doing your own thing.

5.) You believe deep down in the pit of your stomach there’s something you’re supposed to be doing with your life but can’t for the life of you figure out what that is.

Yes, some people are natural born entrepreneurs meaning their passion is starting businesses.  Just because you’ve never saw yourself in this light does not mean you can’t be your own boss.

Ask yourself what you are called to do on this earth.  Can it happen in Corporate America?  Are you supposed to be working for someone else to express this calling or is there another way you are supposed to create a livelihood?  Maybe you can’t pinpoint what you really want because you’re not letting yourself think about all of the possibilities.

Please don’t hold yourself back anymore.  We need you to live your passion however you choose to do that.

Your action plan for the week: Pick up a copy of When Work Doesn't Work Anymore by Elizabeth Perle Mckenna.  I just talked about this book in my blog recently.  I read it about 10 years ago and it totally transformed my perspective on the disconnect between me and the corporate world.

Grab a pen and paper and write at the top "If I knew I would not fail I would..." and fill in the page with your true desires and dreams for your career and life.

Make the decision to go for it. Don't waffle on this. You know if you're supposed to move ahead and start the journey to freedom like you've never known.
