girl-with-snowman.jpgYesterday we had another in the series of oh-there-is-rarely-so-much-snow storms. When my daughter saw the snow falling outside she could hardy contain herself from running out in her pajamas. I convinced her that getting dressed first was a good idea and went looking for her snow pants.

They weren’t there.

They were hanging in her cubby back at preschool, from where I forgot to bring them home on Friday. Even though there was a chance of snow for the weekend. Even thought we always bring the 27 different things in her cubby home at the end of the week to sort through. I forgot them because while I was gathering up her stuff, talking to her teacher and listening to one of her friends tell me about his new Spiderman backpack I was also trying to find a number on my cell phone. (The reason I need the number was because I’d mis-scheduled a call and needed to cancel it. Another in the series of working mom missteps.)

Before I told my daughter that I’d forgotten her snow pants at school I ran to the basement and dug out last year’s pair. Miraculously, they fit (although they were too short) and in a few minutes she was happily rolling around in the snow.

Now I know she could have gone outside without snow pants, but she is one of those kids who hates getting wet, so fun would be limited. But as I watched her play outside I counted my lucky stars that what I forgot at school was not her most-precious-can’t-sleep-without-him-EVER stuffed dog. You know what I am talking about — your life savior, the little stuffed animal or blanket that helped your kids sleep through the night, deal with transitions, make sick days better. Forgetting him at school would be a disaster for our family. (Sara Schaefer Munoz over at The Juggle agrees with me.)

What about you? Have you ever forgotten your child’s security blanket or precious stuffed animal anywhere? Has it been lost? How did you survive? Do you have a backup at your house?

We lost our oldest daughter’s blankie when she was about 18 months old. We’d taken it to the mall with us (mistake #1) and somewhere along the way, she’d thrown it out of the stroller while I wasn’t looking (mistake #2). We didn’t realize that we were without it until we’d gotten home - 30 miles from the mall that we’d lost the blanket at. Our daughter was hysterical - she’d slept with that blankie for months and refused to anywhere without it (hence the bringing it to the mall thing). We felt horrible and my husband and I ended up driving back to the mall and combing it for an hour until we, thankfully, finally found the blanket. We instituted a new rule after that, which still holds to this day - blankies or other such comfort objects don’t leave the house except to go to daycare or otherwise only under very rare, special circumstances. We have left things at daycare several times, but since our daycare is a family home, it’s easy to run over and pick them up if we need to.

When my oldest was 8 months or so and I realized she wasn’t going to live w/out her Angel Baby I quickly scoured the web and ordered 3 more. Thank goodness b/c they don’t make them anymore. I did the same for her little sis when she became attached to her Nanny (not a real nanny, sadly, but a doll that’s almost bigger than she is). They know there are others and, in this season of colds and tons of boogers, I’ve been glad to be able to give them a clean one every night before bed. Angel Baby is not usually allowed out of the house anymore, either. I think I would have a meltdown if we lost one!
