How do you unwind at the end of the day?

Categories: Hacking Life, Working? Living?

When my big kids were little and my little kids were not yet born, I used to warn that if I was in the bathroom with the door locked, no one was allowed to come in unless someone was bleeding. I was only partially kidding—emergencies involving things other than blood would have warranted entry, I guess.

Nowadays, I feel like I’m always working, or thinking about working, or wondering if I should be working. It’s not a healthy way to be for long stretches of time, but I just can’t seem to unwind.

So I’m keeping this post super-short and asking you for ideas. How do you unwind — not in terms of “me time,” necessarily, but just at the end of a regular work day?

Glass of wine? Long bath? Yoga? Prayer? Cooking? First-person shooter games on the Xbox? Going for a run?

What works for you?

  • I check my favorite blogs, if I have time. If I don’t have time, just lying down to go to sleep is lovely. I don’t really need another “activity” to wind me down - all that would do would be to add another thing for me to fit into my tightly-filled day.

  • Love the glass of wine. Also love letting my kids unwind along with me. A snack, a half-hour TV show while I play Words W/Friends and read Twitter on the iPhone… ahhhhhh. :) Then I start dinner.

  • I have trouble with this big time so lately I’ve been swimming with my son a couple of times a week, and/or doing my circuit workout at the end of the day. Some days I watch something fun on TED or Netflix for 30-40 minutes.

If I’m having a really hard time I lay still in corpse pose for 10 min. while listening to chillout lounge on iTunes radio.
