Great Deal: Breville Juice Fountain Plus juicer

Been thinking about buying a juicer, but been deterred by the astronomical price? I feel you. The Breville Juice Fountain Plus is arguably the gold standard at 850 watts (and with great reviews on Amazon), but it retails for around $150. That’s… well, a lot of juice!

So check this out: Today Buy.com has certified refurbished versions for just $70 shipped! That’s over half off the retail price, and absolutely a great deal.

Food and cooking: Food smoker

I am the furthest thing from a Southern girl (I live in the Northwest) but I do love me some good barbecue and smoked food. My husband went on a business trip to Texas nine years ago on the Fourth of JU-LY and came home all hot and bothered about smoked meat and so we used our Airmiles and bought a smoker. That smoker served us well but we had to lay her to rest last year. Research has told me that this Bradley smoker is the way to go, and the fact that it’s on sale makes me happy.

Food and cooking: Turkey roaster

It was, oh, eight years ago when my (then) boss and I got talking about a holiday turkey dinner and she asked if I would like to borrow her turkey roaster. Turkey roaster? What could that be? It is awesome, that’s what. I bought one for our home the next time I saw one on sale and we use it every time we host a turkey dinner (like we’ll be doing tomorrow). The turkey roasts in the roaster (obviously), which leaves your entire oven free to use for casseroles and extra stuffing and BUNS.

Great Deal: Because sometimes pizza pick-up is a luxury!

Okay; fine. Take-out pizza is hardly a luxury in the conventional sense, nor (sorry, Domino’s!) would I call a chain pizza restaurant a luxury under most circumstances. However. Sometimes life gets hectic, and the most luxurious solution to a hungry family can be the convenience of a pizza. Why not make it a bargain, too?

Today Groupon is offering $8 Domino’s large pizzas, and that $8 gets you up to ten toppings (meaning that if you went for “fully loaded,” you’re getting a $20 pizza for just $8). When it’s time to redeem you can only use one per order, but today you can buy up to three of ‘em to have in your arsenal. Really, I’d happily pay way more than $8 to know I had a last-minute dinner save in my pocket, but as long as they’re offering these at a 60% savings, I’ll take it.

Food and Cooking: Salt and pepper shakers

We had a stainless steel set of salt and paper shakers that were given to us years ago. They were quite similar to the ones pictured to the left but the top part was a lot larger, which made them prone to being knocked over (my hand-talking habit aside). Last week, I picked up the salt shaker by it’s dome and the bottom half snapped off and flew across the room, leaving a trail of salt in its wake. We’ve been on the lookout for a new set and these ones go nicely with our decor.

Food and Cooking: A good chef’s knife

I am a bit of a foodie and have a pretty decent arsenal of cookware and knives. I have a new food-related gig and they sent me a knife in addition to some food items. I soon realized that my stash of knives may be a bit dull - this new one actually cuts things like green onions and cilantro, as opposed to just denting them. This Calphalon Katana knife may not have changed my life, but it sure makes dinner prep a little bit (or a whole lot) easier.

Food and Cooking: Apples for Jam Cookbook

I love finding a beautiful cookbook filled with recipes which are tasty, offer some fresh ideas, and don’t take ages to make. A friend suggested Apples for Jam and I’m in love. It’s an absolutely beautiful cookbook, filled with gorgeous photographs and sweet little stories by the author (Tessa Kiros). Every recipe I’ve made from it has been a hit: Lentil soup with cabbage and spinach, chicken cutlets, potato and chickpea puree, and several more.

Food and cooking: Food chopper

I am a bit of a foodie, I always have been. I love to cook and to bake and to putter around in my kitchen. I had (past tense) a Pampered Chef food chopper, which my husband put on the lower rack of the dishwasher. It melted into a lovely modern art piece, but no longer chops like it used to. At his office Christmas party we played the gift game where you can swipe gifts that others have opened, and I ended up with a Slap-Chop, but I am here to tell you that it is pretty much useless. I’ll be buying a Pampered Chef food chopper in the near future (and making sure my husband is schooled in the ways of the dishwasher).
