Technology: Canon point and shoot

I am a photographer, and have a “big camera” (a Canon 7D - DSLR), but there are times when a large camera is not needed. I use my handy dandy iPhone to capture the daily moments. My husband, however (has a birthday coming up, and) goes hiking, fishing, and hunting. And has a 3G iPhone. He’s mentioned getting a good point and shoot that he can take with him and if I’m going to get him one, I’m not going to cheap out. Besides - I can use it too.

Great accessories: iPad external keyboard

I switched from Windows to Mac three years ago and am a fangirl. I have a MacBook Pro, an (old) iTouch, an iPhone 4, and just got an iPad last month. That last one was out of necessity (ish) because I often use my lunch hours to do freelance work, but my day job has now blocked some websites, and is monitoring all Internet usage. Yes, really. The iPad is great, but the keyboard isn’t the best for typing out posts, so I asked for an external keyboard for Christmas. My in-laws came through and it is SO GREAT.

iPhone lenses

I, like many of my friends both online and offline, have an iPhone. I love to use my iPhone as my poiny-and-shoot camera and am an active Instagrammer. I love to take photos, edit photos and share photos. While there are some great apps out there to help me play with the photos I’ve taken, sometimes I wish I could change lens, as I can with my DSLR. Luckily for me (and for you, if this is your thing), Photojojo has created lenses for the iPhone.

Gift ideas: Men’s watches

My husband has a silver watch that he has owned since before we met (twelve years ago). Said watch has bit the dust this week, which is entirely reasonable considering that it has lived one-third of my life span. I went to Amazon with the help of some Twitter friends and I think I might get him this one. Or something like it.

I got an iPad2! I’ve never had an iPad before! This is a REALLY BIG DEAL. I knew that getting a protective case/stand was important and we found one that we thought was perfect. It’s this one.

You may think that the iPad is not an “affordable” luxury, or you may already own one and wonder how it is that I do not own one. Yet. My day job has opted to block Facebook and to track every kind of online activity that we participate in (Hello, 1984). I often use my lunch hours to do freelance work and now that I cannot do that for FEAR OF PUBLIC SHAMING, my Christmas present has been ordered two months early.

Software: Parallels 6.0 for Mac

I switched to the white side (Mac) three years ago and have never looked back. The one thing that made me hesitate to make the switch for so long is the fact that my day job is at an accounting firm and, just like the Mac commercials, accountants use PC’s. If I wanted to work from home, I needed a PC. Thanksfully, I have knowledgeable Mac-loving friends who told me about Parallels, which lets me run a Windows operating system on my Macbook. Worth every penny, in my opinion.

Technology: External battery charger

I spent the last five days at BlogHer which included a lot of walking (and dancing) with my friends. One of those friends pulled out an external battery charger and I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t thought to get one before. When you’re gone from your room from breakfast until bedtime, keeping a charged phone is a bit difficult. I’ll be picking up one of these before my next conference.

Technology: GPS unit

My family just returned from a wee-long holiday that included driving through both Washington and Oregon states. The Google maps app on my iPhone did a pretty good job of directing us in the way I should go but there were a few times that I wished we had a GPS. Sometimes the “blue dot” representing our vehicle wasn’t quite where we were, or the road signage was sorely lacking, and we missed exits. For the ease (and marital sanity) of a GPS, I think it’s worth the cost.

When the iPad first came out my husband, knowing my love of tech gear, told me to go ahead and buy one. After talking to a few friends who owned one I just couldn’t justify the cost. With the iPad 2, however, I can see how it could fit into not just my life (having recipes and such handy, etc.) but to give my kids a chance to get up to speed on touch screen technology (and face time with grandparents!).
