Kid Stuff: Wipe-Clean activity books

Anything kids can use over and over again without getting bored is like gold when you’re traveling and space is at a premium. “Wipe Clean” activity books by Roger Piddy (published by MacMillan) have been a favorite among my kids from back when the tween was a tot. Intended for children age 3 and older, the 26 easy-to-clean pages are printed with colorful photographs, easy activities, and spaces and lines for early learners to practice their letters and numbers. A few swipes of a tissue and they’re ready for another round of connect-the-dots, tracing, drawing, or writing (a baby wipe removes older scribbles easily); they  come with their own dry-erase marker conveniently clipped into the handle, but the ones you swiped from the board room work just as well. Chose from books about animals, “things that go,” letters, numbers, and trivia; the board books are sturdy enough to withstand multiple kids and even get handed down to others when your kids have outgrown them.

Now you have no excuse for looking rumpled or wrinkled when you travel, whether you’re taking the red eye on business or hauling the kids to Grandma’s house. This water bottle-size “Go Mini” Steamer by Joy Mangano warms up within about two minutes, is much safer to use than a conventional travel iron, works on all types of fabrics. It’s also small enough to fit handily in your bag, even if you’re limiting yourself to your carry-on.

Food and Cooking: GoGo SqueeZ

GoGo SqueeZ applesauce has become a staple in my road-trip repertoire, not because they’re healthy (they are) or they taste good (they do), but because of the super-cool packaging. I love it because the sturdy pouch is strong enough to withstand the jabs from whatever is in my bag; it’s also resealable, so if my preschooler doesn’t finish the all-natural fruity puree in one sitting, I can twist the cap back on and save it for later. My kids love it because they don’t need a spoon to eat it, and anything you can squirt directly into your mouth is a treat as far as they’re concerned. Win-win.

About $4 for four 3.2-ounce pouches at Whole Foods stores, or $45 for a case of 48 pouches at Cyber Cucina.

Coghlan’s flint striker is a must-have for anyone reorganizing and restocking their family’s emergency kit. This low-tech gadget allows you to light a fire without matches (Read the review at Gear Diary for a great demonstration of how to use it). As long as your tinder is dry, you can use the rod and striker to start a fire even in wet conditions, and it lasts for years.

$4.98 at Pine Creek Outdoors (via Amazon).

(Wondering what else your emergency kit should have? Here’s a handy checklist for you to print and take to the store.)

Travel Gear: Wedge Door Stop

Door stops are usually used to hold doors wide open, but did you know that when you travel, you can use them as a low-tech way to keep your hotel room more secure? Close and lock your door, then slip this rubber wedge firmly underneath; it’s virtually undetectable from the other side, and won’t cause damage. The stainless-steel hook handle makes it easy to remove with a quick tug.

Loose tea tastes better than the powdery stuff that comes in pre-filled bags, but convenience often trumps taste when you’re on the run or at the office. Blomus’ tea stick takes the hassle out of making a proper cuppa. The spring-loaded, stainless-steel gadget is easy to fill and clean, and the many tiny holes make for perfect steeping.

Kid Stuff: Plum Organics Baby Food

Plum Organics baby food is full of good stuff — organic ingredients, no preservatives, no additives. But what’s especially cool is the clever, resealable pouches their baby food comes in. It’s perfect for parents on the go: Open, squeeze out what you need (directly onto the spoon, if necessary), screw the cap back on, and stash the leftovers in the fridge. The pouches preserve the food naturally, and allow for minimal processing, so all that great flavor is locked inside.

$15 for 16 pouches at Whole Foods and other stores, and online at Drugstore.com.

If you’re looking for a belt without bulk, look no further. The Invisibelt is an adjustable plastic strip that fastens with an interlocking clasp instead of a buckle; slip it through the belt loops of your pants and it seems to disappear under your clothes. Choose black or clear if you don’t want it to be seen, or funky pink, purple, or another a punky pattern if you do. Bonus: It doesn’t cause trouble when you go through airport security, so you can leave your outfit intact.

$16 to 19.95 each at Invisibelt.com.
