Kid Stuff: LeapFrog talking digital camera

Like many kids, mine love to take pictures. The big kids have their own fancy-schmancy digital ones, but my 5- and 3-year-olds are more apt to break conventional cameras than take pictures with them. LeapFrog’s cute green camera is a perfect solution. The picture quality is fine for budding photographers, the 1.5-inch screen can be used as a viewfinder, the built-in flash ensures that the eleventy-billion pictures they take of the rug and wainscoting will be adequately lit, and the integrated photo editing software will let you help them sift through their shots to find their masterpieces. Download the shots to your computer with the USB cable (included), and get ready to really see the world through your kids’ eyes.

Travel Gear: Adapter/converter/USB charger

If you travel overseas for any reason, in this day and age you’ll probably want to keep your technology with you — and working properly. This little powerhouse is a voltage adapter, converter, and a USB charger all in one, so you can leave those multi-part converter kits at home. It’ll run your computer, power your cell phone, and charge your MP3 player without a problem. Not sure what type of outlet will be waiting for you at your destination? It comes with four of the most-common adapter plugs for more than 150 countries in North America, Australia, Europe, and the UK, and does the 220V to 110V conversion automatically — and it even accepts three-prong plugs (though it doesn’t ground or provide surge protection).

Technology: Tweakers mini speakers

Many portable speakers sound tinny; high-quality ones usually come with a very high price. These tiny (3-3/4 by 1-3/4 inch) cylinders from Tweakers let your MP3 player or laptop produce big sound for little money. The bright red or silver speakers come with a built-in USB charging cord — a single charge lasts for about six hours of playing time — and they attach together magnetically for easy packing.

If you’re a Mac user, you know that easy-to-find accessories like webcams don’t always work with your computer. This HP webcam (model KQ245AA#ABA) is of the new generation, with UVC “plug-and-play” capabilities that allow it to work with Macs as easily as it does with PCs. The 2 megapixel camera has an autofocus sensor, 5x digital zoom, can make cools videos and take still pictures, has a built-in microphone, and offers easy, “instant” chat, video, and photo buttons. Best of all, though, it’s affordable — and it works on my Mac.

It’s a headband. It’s a bandana. It’s a balaclava. It’s a scrunchie. It’s a turtleneck. It’s a face mask. It’s a skull cap. It’s a tube top. It’s … the incredibly versatile Buff, and the girls in my household adore it. The long, seamless microfiber tube can be worn in at least 12 different ways, and it doesn’t snag or chafe, making it perfect for keeping our curls in tip-top condition while we sleep, and out of our faces while they work and play. There are plenty of colors, materials, and patterns to choose from (for guys, too — it’s great under a helmet).

Technology: Jupiter Jack

I love my iPhone, but I can’t hook it into my car’s ancient audio system and listen to my own music as I drive. The Jupiter Jack is intended to be a speakerphone, but it works equally well to transmit tunes from your iPod via your car’s stereo system. Plug it into the headphone jack on your phone or MP3 player (it comes with six adapters that work with most gadgets), turn it on, and tune your radio to the frequency specified on the jack. It comes through loud and clear, for the most part (honestly, it does pick up a little interference from time to time), and a little fuzziness is a small price to play in order to hear what you want, when you want, on the road.
