Software: Parallels 6.0 for Mac

Categories: Technology, Work Happy

I switched to the white side (Mac) three years ago and have never looked back. The one thing that made me hesitate to make the switch for so long is the fact that my day job is at an accounting firm and, just like the Mac commercials, accountants use PC’s. If I wanted to work from home, I needed a PC. Thanksfully, I have knowledgeable Mac-loving friends who told me about Parallels, which lets me run a Windows operating system on my Macbook. Worth every penny, in my opinion.

Food storage: Stainless steel lunch box

A friend threw out the question on Facebook last week to see if any of us knew where to buy stainless steel lunch containers. Her oldest child starts Kindergarten this fall and she doesn’t want to use plastic. We use plastic, for both our kids and our own lunches but I’m thinking that we should switch to stainless steel. There are a lot of options out there and these LunchBots look like they’ll be perfect for the entire family.

Work happy: Fun laptop case

I finally came to the white side (Macbook) two years ago and will never go back. When I got my shiny new laptop I opted for the bigger screen and extra memory and a good external hard drive and after all of that cash outflow I hesitated to buy a new laptop bag. While tossing it into my backpack is all fine and good, sometimes I only need the laptop and not my entire backpack full of stuff. Plus, what’s the harm in packing something pretty in something equally as pretty? I perused Etsy for laptop cases and I found the case of my dreams! Well, I like almost every case in the janinekingdesigns store, but this one is in my top three.

Technology: Dell Vostro V130

A computer is a must-have for any home office, of course, but a lightweight laptop is a must-have for anyone who needs to bring their office on the road with them. Dell graciously offered to let me test out their newest offering, the Vostro V130, and even though I’m a Mac girl at heart, I developed quite a crush on this pretty, ultra-portable computer.

The Vostro V130 is a deep cherry red, which is pretty to look at, of course, and it’s super-skinny (just 0.65 of an inch in the front and 0.78 of an inch in the back). But looks are only skin deep, and the real power is on the inside: an Intel Core ULV processor, a full-sized keyboard, a 13.3-inch High Definition WLED display, a HDMI port (so you can connected it to your HDTV), two USB 2.0 ports, a shared USB/eSATA port, 802.11n wireless technology, optional WiMAXtechnology, and Bluetooth 3.0 (to wirelessly connect to your mouse, printer, or headset). The SIM card slot is a nice touch, as is the built-in webcam — video conferencing is the new normal, after all.

My only two quibbles: If you wanted to use it to watch a movie on the plane, you’d have to make sure you’ve downloaded one first — there’s no DVD player. Which means that if a client hands you a disc full of images (some still do), you’ve got to get them off the disc before you can get on with your work. The clicky keyboard and touchy mouse took a little getting used to, too, but that complaint is easy to solve with a separate Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse.

Technology: Driinn cell phone charger shelf

This isn’t techonology, per se, but it’s for holding something technological, so it counts, in my book. The Driin cell phone charger shelf hooks over your power cord once it’s been plugged into an electrical outlet; the slim shelf holds both your phone and the excess cord, keeping your counter or desktop neat and tidy (and your phone easily accessible). Made in Italy, it comes in seven colors, from stark white to basic black to bright pink, and it’s low price makes it an excellent stocking stuffer for working moms everywhere.

Turns out that you can be a slave to fashion and still stay comfortable, even when it comes to your feet. Instead of sadly giving up those killer heels, slip a set of these foldable ballet flats in your bag. City Slips fold in half to fit inside your purse, and they come with their own carrying case as well as a soft bag in which you can tote your stillettos while you’re walking through the airport or from meeting to meeting. Available in black, gold, and silver, and in leather and non-leather versions.

$24.95 (non-leather) at Cityslips.com; all-leather versions ($58, in black, gold, or leopard print) available at Neiman Marcus stores.

If you’re trying to decorate or organize a small space (like a dorm room, a child’s bedroom, or a home office), these brightly colored pieces pack a one-two punch. Covered in polyester microsuede, the 15-inch cubes come in eye-popping colors like fuchsia, teal, and lime green as well as basic black and chestnut brown. Lift the lid to find a surprisingly good amount of space inside — enough for a family of stuffed animals, a fleet of toy cars, reams of printer paper, or even a college kid’s dirty laundry.

$17 each at Target stores.

Travel Gear: Adapter/converter/USB charger

Categories: General, Technology, Travel Gear, Work Happy

If you travel overseas for any reason, in this day and age you’ll probably want to keep your technology with you — and working properly. This little powerhouse is a voltage adapter, converter, and a USB charger all in one, so you can leave those multi-part converter kits at home. It’ll run your computer, power your cell phone, and charge your MP3 player without a problem. Not sure what type of outlet will be waiting for you at your destination? It comes with four of the most-common adapter plugs for more than 150 countries in North America, Australia, Europe, and the UK, and does the 220V to 110V conversion automatically — and it even accepts three-prong plugs (though it doesn’t ground or provide surge protection).

Technology: Tweakers mini speakers

Many portable speakers sound tinny; high-quality ones usually come with a very high price. These tiny (3-3/4 by 1-3/4 inch) cylinders from Tweakers let your MP3 player or laptop produce big sound for little money. The bright red or silver speakers come with a built-in USB charging cord — a single charge lasts for about six hours of playing time — and they attach together magnetically for easy packing.
