Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

When The Cat’s Away

The GirlsWhen I returned from my trip to California I was refreshed, renewed, rejuvenated. Between work-related trips and fun-filled get-aways (such as the California one) I get the heck out of dodge a whole lot more than many Moms seem to do. And also, a whole lot more than my husband ever does.

My hubby, in all of his wonderfulness, takes care of our three kids on the many weekends that I go away with nary a complaint. OK, fine. He teases me a bit. My response upon returning from California was that he needed to book a trip. Correction. He was ORDERED to take a trip.

This weekend he and his closest Man-friends are renting a cabin at a local ski-hill. They will ride their snowmobiles, drink beer, get a break from the daily routine of family. Us wives will hold down our respective forts.

When my kids were babies this would mean that I would be trapped in the house with a little peanut chained to my chest. However. My kids are getting older. The plan for this weekend is for a small group of my Best Girls (those of us wives left behind, plus a few more) to go to a wine Seminar and then to catch an Irish band in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. I plan to embrace my Irish heritage with every fiber of my being. Green beer excluded.

In light of the weekend, tell me what you do when your spouse is away. Do you stay home? Or do you go out and shake your money-maker (I’M KIDDING) (SORT OF).

  • I stay home and relish having the bed all to myself. I sleep in the very centre of the bed, surrounded by puppies. I turn the damn heat on and watch crappy tv shows and listen to British rock bands. All things that I get nagged about when the husband is home.

  • Jay NEVER goes anywhere. His choice. But yet, supports my need to get out every once in awhile. I love him

Have a great weekend, sounds like fun, minus the green beer ;)

  • I stay home..and usually bake or cook…with HGTV or Lifetime on all day..while my kids wonder around the house and do whatever they do to entertain themselves.

  • My husband has never gone away without me. He will however being heading out of state for a boys only golf tournament with a group of guys he’s known since high school, in June. He may or may not be taking our daughter and dropping her off with his family (depends if they will pay for her plane ticket) So here are my daydreams for that upcoming weekend…
I’ve already invited my mom, her best friend, and my grandmother to come stay with me. My sister lives in town already. I am hoping for a lovely girls weekend of shopping (well, at least window shopping for me), eating, and just hanging out, soaking up the awesome female companionship. And maybe Grandma will babysit my daughter (if she stays) and my niece so that us wild women can go out and party.
If those plans fall through, I will spend the weekend cleaning the crap out of my house. I’m talking closet cleaning, baseboards, fridge handle, hands and needs scrubbing the floor. Since hubby won’t be there, he can’t tick me off by sitting on the couch watching the boob tube while I work my butt off. ; - )

  • Since Troy’s in the Navy, he’s gone a lot. We pretty much go on with life as usual, with maybe a bit more traveling thrown in to distract us when he’s gone for long periods of time.

  • At this point, I’d probably stay home (BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW ANYONE HERE) or else I’d go out with my ONE friend :)

Hope you have a great weekend!!

  • Depends. Sometimes I stay home, sometimes I go out.
Often the boys and I will hang out at my parents’ place during the daytime when Rob is away, because it’s nice to have their company. But in the evenings, after I’ve put the kids to bed, I relish the time on my own. I watch TV, read my book, eat (I never cook proper dinners when he’s away, I always feed the boys early and then eat my own dinner later on. It’s nice to have a night off).

  • my hubby never goes away unless I take him. however, a long time friend of his has invited him to a ghost-hunting event at the college he is attending (the same college that my hubby attended)–hubby doesn’t drive so he doesn’t go unless someone takes him.

  • I stay home, but my son and I often go out to eat and enjoy the bonding time.

  • uh I’m usually the one who goes away. However if hubby’s out for the night, I usually put the kids to bed early and indulge in…. scotch or port or cookies or I don’t know, I just enjoy the quiet solitude.

  • The only time he went OFT without me- I enjoyed the peace & quiet. Took the youngest and went out to eat- shopping, etc. Was nice little vacation for me too- I just had mine @ home. Not a problem.
