Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Flirting via the internet

LaptopMy husband and I are both self-employed and spend the bulk of our days trading off work/parenting duties. In addition to working and parenting we are pretty good at firing the innuendos at each other. Our oldest child is now six, but so far he still has no idea what we are actually referring to. We may have to resort to speaking in code in the near future, which will probably be all sorts of awesome.

I am working at my former accounting firm for tax season and as such have not been at home. A few friends have sent me e-cards from someecards.com, and I thought it would be nice to send one to my husband since we are apart for about ten hours each day.

(Warning to my more conservative readers. The e-cards on that site are somewhat/horribly (Finger quote) inappropriate.))

I was browsing through the cards for a card to send to my dear husband. I found one that made me giggle like a schoolgirl…and then got me into the silent laughter. It took me longer than usual to send it because I could not type through my tears (I was laughing that hard).

Are you curious? If you are brave, here is what I sent to him.

No shame. I am a married woman, after all.

In this digital age, phone calls and emails are great and all but sometimes you need to kick it up a notch.

How about you? How do you flirt with your spouse?

  • The innuendo flies around here like monkeys in an accounting office. We’re wondering when we have to cut it out, but most of it still flies over our almost-8-year-old’s head.

That eCard? OH. MY. WORD. I showed it to Noah and he said that my internet friends were “terribly inappropriate people”. I know he liked it too but is just too cool to admit to it.

  • I flirt with my spouse the same way you do, apparently, because as soon as I saw that someecard, I sent it to Torsten. Hilarious.

  • This is fantastic, Angella! And now I’ll be on that site for the next hour finding ones to send out.

  • Woah. That card was NOT what I was expecting!

Rob and I don’t really flirt over the internet, mostly because Rob is hardly EVER online. And I work from home, hogging the only computer. But we send each other texts … you know, ones you wouldn’t want to accidentally send to your in-laws or your grandma. It works for us! ;-)

So … you need to tell us what Matthew thought of that card!!!

  • Mrs. Wilson - He TOTALLY love it ;)

Hillary - Dude. I’m still giggling a week later.

Jess - Awesome. The fact that you “paid it forward” brings me no end of glee.

She Likes Purple - Jenny? Once you start looking at cards, you can’t stop. Just so you know.

    Hannah - DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU. :) He loved it, btw :)

  • OMG, I absolutely love that card! I went right to the silent laugh.
My husband has just learned the fabulousness of text msgs…I just have to wait until recess to look at them. :D

  • Ha! Jay would appreciate that one! Though I am pretty sure it would never get through the firewalls etc at his work :)

we do lots of emails, you know, in code, on account of the firewalls.
