with Angella Dykstra
I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.
Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.
We were visiting with friends this week and the topic of having a TV in your bedroom came up. Our friends have a television in their room and will often turn it on at the end of the day. The husband is more of a night owl and will stay up watching late night TV while his wife drifts off to sleep. It works for them.
My husband and I don’t have a TV in our bedroom. We are not opposed to it, but have just never seen the need for it. It’s just as easy to cuddle on the couch to watch the boob tube as it is to watch it in our room.
I once had a coworker that having a TV in her bedroom was one of the reason that her marriage came to an end. She and her husband had gotten into the habit of watching shows rather than talking and, well, you know.
How about you? Do you have a TV in your bedroom?

I used to be SO against having a tv in the bedroom. And then we moved into an open-concept condo and the bedroom was the only room that was actually separate from the rest of the space (um, except for the bathroom.) We need two tv’s because of his love of video games and my love of really crappy reality tv, so we put a tv in the bedroom. And it’s been fine. It’s been great, actually.

We don’t have one. We did for a bit, and it wasn’t an issue. We still, you know - but we turned the TV off first.

I’m really against t.v.s in the bedrooms. For couples and for kids. We’ll never have a t.v. in our room and neither will the girls.

No TV in our bedroom - and we will never let our boys have TVs in their rooms, either. That’s just my opinion though. I don’t think they belong in bedrooms. Fullstop.

No. I read somewhere that TVs running at all hours and invading your “peaceful” space contributes to depression.
I am a lot happier the less TV I have in my life.

We once had a tv in every room of the house that didn’t have a toilet, not kidding. We bartered our way down to the living room, family room and our bedroom. Yes, we have one in our bedroom and yes, it is the bane of my existence. The deal is that we don’t turn it on if we’re both in there; fortunately, we almost never are at the same time.
And I will say that as much as I hate it, when Big Love is on and so is Hockey, I suddenly thank sweet baby jesus we have it.

We have a TV in our bedroom, however it is our plan not to have one in our daughter’s room. During sports season I hide in the bedroom and watch TV while my husband is watching it downstairs. We also have my husband’s stationary bike in our bedroom and he watches TV while he rides. The best reason for us is in the morning - the weather and news without having to go downstairs. Also it is a bride for my 2 1/2 year old while doing her hair. However, unlike many of our friends we only have three TVs (none are flat screen) and one of those only plays DVDs.

I fought it for the longest time, but when my husband finally won the argument, it turned out that we hardly use it. Maybe the occasional news or late-night show when he’s having trouble winding down and getting to sleep. Much better to be able to cuddle with him while he watches than having him down in the living room. It turned out not to be a big deal at all.
My kids will never have TV in their rooms, however. I had friends growing up who did, and saw first-hand how they were major TV junkies.

Yes & no. We have an extra small TV but it isn’t hooked to the cable. When my daughter was ill, I pulled it into the bedroom for some kid videos. Generally it lives in a closet in the off position. If I’ve had trouble sleeping I might haul it in and pop in a video to sleep to, but that is really rare for me.

Did with my ex husband. Don’t now…and don’t miss it at all.
