Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Romance or action? Or both?

I have to admit that my husband and I do not watch a lot of TV, nor do we watch many movies. People often ask me how I manage to get all that I do done and I point to that fact. When the kids are in bed my husband will often putter in the shop and I will typity typity type to get my work (and play) all wrapped up.

Then there are nights where we 1) Need a break, 2) Need a break and 3) Need a break. Sometimes we curl up on the couch and see what our PVR has to offer. Sometimes we will go to a place called a theater and watch something called a movie. It’s neat.

In both situations we will often get into a (non-heated) debate about what we should be spending our time watching. I tend to lean toward romantic comedies (or straight-up comedies) and action films, while my husband is more into the action and adventure genre. Romantic/basic comedies are not his first choice, but lo! The ones I choose always make him laugh and not regret my choice. It is (usually) the same with the shows that he chooses. Shoot ‘em up! BANG-BANG-BANG!

While we lean towards different ends of the spectrum, we tend to enjoy the show that the other chooses. Usually. And if not, there is much fodder with which to tease each other about.

Do you and your other half share the same taste in shows?

  • Bizarrely, we do OK with TV but not with movies. We both like House. I watch American Idol and now Torsten watches it with me. Torsten watches 24 and now I watch it with him. When Lipstick Jungle was on he would watch that with me as well. We both enjoy Friends and Family Guy. But movies? OMG I hate action movies and he hates romantic comedies and it’s a problem. There are some drama type movies we both like but for the most part? Polar opposites. The one thing we do both like is Pixar. Other than that, we hardly ever go to the movies because our tastes are so different.

  • Noah and I are the same way, except Noah also likes the movies that keep me up at night with the light on looking for the monster under the bed.

The last movie we watched was He’s Just Not That Into You. He wasn’t a huge fan, but I did catch him laughing a couple times.

  • Hehe, when I saw the title of this post, I didn’t realise you were talking about movies!! ;-)

Rob and I have very similar taste in both TV shows and movies. I’m glad!

  • Steve and I have completely different tastes in movies, music, hobbies, and well, pretty much everything! Compromise is the name of the game, which usually means one of us is grumpy about the other’s choices. :)
