Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

When was your first kiss?

A college friend of mine called over the weekend and it was great to get caught up on each others’ lives and families. She brought her husband and three kids out here last summer and while six kids under the age of six in one house was, shall we say, chaotic, our families had a great time together.

I hung up the phone and relayed bits and pieces of the conversation to my husband. In the midst of my (compelling, I’m sure) recap I remembered a tidbit about my friend and her husband that had always struck me as interesting. Not interesting in a bad way, but interesting in a “I don’t know how they did it” way.

They’re very first kiss was…on their wedding day.

I know, right? I’m not knocking them in any way, I am just in awe that they were able to do it. My husband and I didn’t have sex until we were married, and that was hard enough. We had our first kiss about a week after we started dating and kissing was (and is) a big part of our relationship. As is sex. Obviously.

The first kiss wasn’t anything romantic or at a special event or anything. We were cuddling and watching a movie and it finally happened. And it was good.

How about you? When was your first kiss with your spouse?

  • My friend’s little sister had her first kiss ever on her wedding day. I am still in awe as to how they were able to do that.

  • Our first kiss was after our first date - when I dropped him off. (Yes, I had a car and he did not.) I’m not exactly a, um, waiting sort of girl. Also, I had a three-year-old when we met, so my first kiss was definitely NOT on my wedding day. BUT, anyone who HAS had their first kiss on their wedding day? Has my complete and utter respect. And wow factor.

  • It wasn’t either of our first kisses ever, but OUR first kiss was amazing. We waited nearly three agonizing months before we finally locked lips. We wanted to make it super special, so we waited until we could return to the site of one of our very first “dates,” the Golden Gate Bridge. Needless to say, it was perfect, and I’m sooo glad we waited. It was definitely a kiss to remember.

  • My first kiss with Shawn was roughly 15 minutes after meeting him. Drunk. In a bar. Yes, we are classy people.

  • We discussed our first kiss for about an hour before we did it. We discussed how we liked each other, had for some time, and we should totally kiss. For an HOUR.

Yes, we are weird. But it was the best first kiss. Very intense (maybe because we talked it up so much.) The kiss itself lasted over an hour so I think that evens it out, right? Still weird? Ok then . . .

My lips were bruised when it was all over.

  • Heehee. I give my hubby SUCH a hard time about our first kiss. He was SOOOOO afraid of me because I was such an innocent good girl. (Note: Just becuase someone is a virgin does not always mean they are innocent) The first kiss was kinda sweet/kinda lame - I was just glad it FINALLY happened :) ha. memories.

  • hehe we were friends for 4 years before but one or the other of us were always in a relationship. We always flirted and liked eachother with a huge attraction.. but never crossed the line. We started hanging out when both of us were single and I thought it was just as friends (altho we flirted a LOT). We were on his bed watching a movie (his bed acted as a couch…) and he was playing with the seams of my clothes. Kind of tickling, kind of cuddlng.. then he says ‘kissssss meeeeee’ hahah i kept saying no
haha i was nervous to cross the friend line!! i said he can kiss me if he wants to kiss so bad
    hehe finally we did:)
