Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Where was your first date?

My husband and I try (Try being the operative word) to have regular date nights. We end up getting out sans kids about twice a month which really isn’t too bad considering how hectic our lives are. We make the time to go because we need that time to connect…even though we spend the bulk of our time together talking about the three kids we’ve left at home.

Our kids are getting older and starting to understand the concept of dating. Kind of. They know that we are married to each other and that we go out on date nights. Somewhere along the way during a conversation about this, our oldest (he’s seven) asked us how we ended up being married to each other. I told him the story of our first date.

You can read the full story here if you are interested, but I kept it pretty short and sweet when telling the kids about it (Short attention spans and whatnot). I told them that Daddy had invited me for dinner (He made lasagna!), that I brought along a salad and that we sat and talked at his kitchen table for five hours. We talked a lot and laughed a lot and felt instantly and irrevocably at ease with each other. By the time I left to go home we had plans for three more dates within the next week. It was the best first date I’ve ever had.

How about you? Where was your first date?

  • We didn’t have a ‘first date’ per se, as we had been hanging out as best buds for some time.
The day I moved out of home, a few months after high school grad, he used his car to help me move my (single carload of) belongings to my new place. At this point we had been flirting pretty heavily for a few weeks, and the day of the move, we stood in my new bedroom and shared our first kiss.
After I pulled away, I said “You know, you’re never going to get rid of me now.”
He said “OK,” and kissed me again.

  • Like Danica, we were good friends for a long time and hung out all the time. Finally, one night, he said “why aren’t we dating?” I said “because you never asked” and that was that. The next night, he took me out to a steak dinner, then I took him mini-golfing. We also rented “What Women Want” and watched it after golfing, but that was such a crappy movie I try to forget about it.

  • I’m sure I have probably told you the story of where Brian and I went on our first date, but in case I haven’t…….. We went to his parents’ basement. To make out. And then I broke up with him the next day because I wasn’t sure that I wanted the relationship to “go anywhere”.

It took us quite a while to get on the same page, but eventually we did. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that we ended up happily married with two kids!
