Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Date Night Makeover

Categories: dating, marriage

I am a huge proponent of having a regular Date Night, as those of you who read regularly can attest to. We aim for once every second week, though sometimes it’s longer than that. Or, in the case of last weekend, we had a date night on both Friday and Sunday (Friday was just us, Sunday was a friend’s birthday dinner)(Yes, that counts, because there was fifteen pounds of Alaskan King Crab and ever-flowing wine).

I have also been truthful here in saying that our date night can get pretty routine. Dinner (at the exact same restaurant) and Costco, anyone? Though I have to give us kudos not for going to dinner at the exact same restaurant again, BUT going…shopping at the mall instead of Costco. We know how to party.

I think it’s time to shake things up around here and I stumbled across a post over at Yahoo! Shine titled, “Make Over Your Date Night“. There are some pretty fantastic suggestions in the post. A few of my favorites:

Wine tasting. (We did this! A year ago. Time to go again.)

Laser tag. Yes! We can shoot each other! Like people in love do!

Jam together. We both love live music but only make the effort when a favorite band comes to town. We should go to more local events with local artists.

Swing. A dance class! We actually took a ballroom dancing class in our first year of marriage and had SO MUCH FUN. We don’t remember any of it…time for a refresher?

How about you - anything you’d like to try? Or another fantastic suggestion for the rest of us to use in order to spice up our date nights?

  • Shooting range. I recently took a basic handgun class and wanted to show off my new skills to my husband, an avid marksman. We had so much fun when I actually knew what I was doing! And he was impressed that I could competently participate in one of his hobbies. So much so, he watched a French comedy with me last night. And LIKED IT!!! Go figure!
