Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

What are you getting your spouse for Christmas?*

My husband and I were talking last week about what we had on our respective agendas and I reminded him that I would be driving to the Big City an hour away for three days in order to meet my annual Professional Development requirements.

Let me reiterate that I reminded him. We had discussed (We. Had DISCUSSED) these days numerous times in the past month or so and this was not NEWS. I was simply bringing up pre-arranged commitments that I had made for work.

He proverbially lost his…composure. He had asked me a month or so ago if he could give me an “early Christmas present” and still have something for me to open on Christmas day. It turns out that this “early present” conflicts with one of those PD courses.

DUDE. Communication is kind of awesome.

But! He went and contacted my office and I’ve been excused from my course. YAY. Also. I have NO IDEA what event he’s concocted.

He has also told me that he is “done” shopping for me. I haven’t asked for anything but he’s always great at buying presents for me (Like, BANG ON) and, so. I know I’ll be spoiled yet again.

As for me, I have NO IDEA what to get him and he’s not really helping me (at all) and I think I’ll be spending this Friday night after my PD course wandering the streets of the Big City, hoping to find a clutch gift (or five) for him.

Help me out, ladies (and gents). What are you getting for your spouse for Christmas? Or, for the dudes, what are you hoping for under the tree?

*Or Hanukkah or Kwanza or Happy December or I Just Think You’re Neat, etc.

  • A new pair of sunglasses (the kind for fishing…apparently there is a type that helps you see fish under the water?) and clothes (because he had gastric bypass a year ago and is at his “sweet spot” now). Also, per his request, floor mats for his truck.

  • I am zero help in this department. Mr. Darcy isn’t giving me any good suggestions. I bought something clothing related but that’s not very exciting for him. I am thinking about getting him tickets to something. I find shared experiences can be a wonderful gift. I’m looking into comedians coming to town as he loves comedy shows.

  • My boss got me an excellent deal on a Canucks jersey for my husband and I’m going to try and get us Bon Jovi tickets on Thursday when they go on sale. Then he has a list of comic book “stuff” that I’m just supposed to take to the local CB store and say “please give me this stuff and I will pay you handsomely for it.” Also, he will get socks.

  • I think I’m getting him a Kobo e-reader. He bought one for me and always wants to steal it to read, so he’s getting his own in a different colour!

  • He’s getting snowshoes… so he can finally join me on the mountain trails this winter. And a night at a sushi-making class.

  • Oh, THANK YOU for this post, and to Sizzle for the comedian tickets. I just bought some for our favorite comic who’s going to be in town in January. Until this moment I had NO EARTHLY IDEA what to get for my husband. He always wants the newest tech stuff but I’m useless in that dept. A shared experience will be perfect! Now, off to find a babysitter. :)

  • I have no idea! I’m usually pretty good at buying gifts for him but this year I have zombie-brain.

  • I already bought him a nice lightweight leather jacket.
I think I’ll also get him a new pair of sunglasses, and a new pocket knife. Very manly I know.

I already got my presents, a 32G iPod Touch and an all-in-one printer - SuhWEET!

  • We are so lame. Haven’t even been married 4 years and we buy our own presents :) We bought tickets to a local(ish) summer festival next JULY cause they are super cheap now (well cheaper). This is his present since it’s 3 days of Jam Band music and involves camping! We bought a 26″ LED TV (cyber monday) for the office which is my present because I’ve been wanting it, but it’ll double as his computer monitor. I’ll get to play kiddo videos for the baby while I work, work out w/ Jillian, and watch ‘chic’ TV whenever I want :) (We only have 1 other TV in the house which he pretty much controls)

For the record I did surprise him last year with 3 months of personal coaching to prepare for a 100 mile extremely mountainous bike ride he did last June. So I’m not ALWAYS LAME.
