Committed: The Ties that Bond
with Angella Dykstra
I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.
Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

As I mentioned in my last post, my husband has planned an “early Christmas present” for me, happening this weekend. Well, not the whole weekend as the kids have activities on Saturday and we have church on Sunday (my husband is on staff). I do know that I’ve been excused from a work course on Monday morning but am not sure if that involves an overnight trip somewhere? Maybe? But it would be a quick trip, what with our Sunday and Monday committments.
I really have no idea.
He has also told me that he’s finished Christmas shopping for me, even though I did not even tell him one thing to buy me. He’s always good at paying attention to when I mention things and blows me away pretty much every year for both Christmas and my birthday.
The curiosity drives me a little bit crazy, but not enough to go digging around to see what he’s purchased. I could look at our credit card statement online (we always ban each other from doing so in the month or two before Christmas) or go rooting through closets and such, but I really do like the surprise more than I hate the suspense.
How about you? Do you like surprises? Or are you the type of person who has to have your presents hidden at a distant and secret location?

I like surprises to an extent… and I’m patient enough to wait until the gift giving day to get and give gifts.

It depends what the surprise is. Generally, I think I’m too much of a control freak for it. Like this summer, my husband decided to surprise me and hired a cleaning company to come in and deep clean our apartment, but he didn’t actually tidy up our things first, so I come home to strangers in my house, cleaning around piles of dirty clothes, our son’s toys, my husband’s work papers, etc. Aargh. Not a good surprise, unfortunately

My husband took me by the shoulders, looked me in the eyes and told me what he wanted last night. I like surprises. He does not. We’re learning to live like this.

As far as gifts go, I’m a fan of surprises. When it comes to other stuff? Not so much a fan of surprises.

While I love surprise presents, I think that my worst nightmare would be a surprise party thrown in my honour. As far as ruining my surprise presents….I end up doing it all the time inadvertently…..my husband needs to quit “hiding” presents in places like his sock drawer when I’m the one that does the laundry.

I love surprises. My wily husband surprised me with a trip to see college friends for my 30th birthday, then further surprised me with another birthday party while we were there…at Chuck E Cheese. It was highly entertaining.
