Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

How do you celebrate your anniversary?

One week from today, my husband and I will celebrate our eleventh (!) wedding anniversary. Last year was our tenth anniversary (obviously) and we spent four (gamble-free) nights in Las Vegas to celebrate. We walked along the strip (and walked)(and walked some more) and sat by the pool and saw our first Cirque du Soleil show (O) and shopped and went to Fremont Street and sat by the pool and went to the piano bar at Harrah’s and took a thousand photos and, oh. It really was lovely.

A trip away isn’t in the cards this year, for a myriad of reasons. The plan is to go out for dinner and a movie (Thor) but that just seems like our usual date night fare and we always buy flowers for the garden as our “present” to each other but I feel like I should do something more, you know? I’d surprise him with a night away but there are those three pesky (yet wonderful) kids and nobody to come to stay with them and so I want to do something special and creative.

I just don’t know what that special and creative thing is.

How about you? How do you celebrate your anniversary?

  • We’ve had five anniversaries so far. I’ve been pregnant for two of them, we were separated for one of them, and I have NO IDEA what we did for the other two. I’m thinking, though, that one of these days (maybe for our 10th?) we might actually have to CELEBRATE it.

  • It’s my job to plan the anniversary (he does Valentines Day).
It’s a good thing I have until August because I have no idea what we’re going to do this year. Hey, eleven for us too.

  • It varies wildly. Usually we save up the money that we save on our grocery bill each week and either do something fun or buy something expensive that we want. Last year, I got a new laptop, and he took the day off work to surprise me with an awesome home-cooked meal. Whatever we do, there is always good food involved!

  • One week from tomorrow, Scott and I celebrate ours! Shocker, we celebrate everything with, you guessed it, travel. We’ll be spending two nights at a super luxe resort in a national park in Utah. Can’t wait!

  • Both our birthdays, Christmas, our anniversary, and New Year’s are within about 5 weeks of each other, so we rarely do much to celebrate. And now we even have a child’s birthday on Christmas Day! This year will be our 10th so we’re really really really hoping we can line things up financially to actually get away. I’ve just started dreaming it up and have been thinking Seattle …. we shall see.
