Committed: The Ties that Bond
with Angella Dykstra
I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

While driving to work yesterday morning I heard about the former LOST actor (age: 51) who married a girl (age: 16). All together now: EWWWWW.
I mean, really. THIRTY-FIVE years apart in age? In the article it states that the girl’s father is younger than his new son-in-law. I can see why the husband is in for it (Duh) but why would a sixteen-year-old girl want to marry him? Why would her parents sign off on the marriage documents? HOW DID THEY EVEN MEET?
I’m locking my daughter in a tower. STAT.
The craziness of the story aside, I don’t think that people have to be the same age to be compatible. Back in the day I dated guys three to five years older than I was. A friend’s husband is seven years older than her and they have been married for ten years, with three kids, happily. I have family members who have an even greater age gap. But nowhere close to THIRTY-FIVE YEARS.
As for my husband and I, we are two years apart in age. Three school grades, as I skipped third grade. Yes, that’s right. I am older than my husband. I find it humorous to tell people that when I was in twelfth grade, he was in ninth grade. He’d rather I not mention that little detail.
How about you? What is your age difference?

My husband is 21 years older than me…. I’m 35 he’s 56. And his children are 5 and 8 years younger than me. So, I’m here to tell you, it can be weird, but it can also be awesome.

My husband is 6.5 years older than me, and we’ve been married for 21 years! I really never notice the difference until he starts talking about shows he watched when he was a kid - although some of that has to do with the fact that he is American and I’m Canadian. He doesn’t know about Mr. Dress-up or the Friendly Giant!

I’m nearly 4 years (and was 4 grade levels) older than my fiance.
My grandfather was first married to a woman who was 10 years younger than him. She passed away and he then married a woman who is the same age as his oldest daughter… a little weird but I guess it worked for them.

We are almost exactly 2 years apart (I’m younger by 25 months). We were only one grade apart in high school though, since he was held back a grade in Grade 3 (class clown, he was). And yes, we were friends in high school, but we didn’t start dating unti our mid-20s. I never notice an age difference, but then again, we have the same cultural/religious background, and we grew up living in the same city - heck, we only lived 2 kms away from each other!

My mom was with a man for seven years who was older than her father. Even though she was a grown woman and capable of making that kind of decision for herself (a sixteen year old is not!)- it was still way gross.
Matthew is 9 months younger than me and never lets up with the old lady jokes.

I’ve dated much older and much younger men when I was in my 20’s and some older men in my 30’s and I didn’t like it at all. Older guys are too set in their ways and just so boring and really young guys are so flaky and juvenile and have no manners.
My last boyfriend was 3 years younger. My current man of 5 years is 2 years younger and that seems to be the perfect age difference for me so far. Slightly younger men are more fun but still responsible. I’ve been watching.
The whole Accidentally on Purpose scenario where Jenna Elfman’s character is in her late 30’s and her baby daddy is only 22 would not work for me at all!
