Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

When do you open your presents?

Playing with bokeh on my iPhone. (Hi, Instagram friends. I miss you. Happy holidays!)We celebrate Christmas in our house, which means that there are advent calendars and Christmas concerts and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and baking and turkey dinner and a whole lot of wonder.

Some friends of ours have turkey dinner and open presents on Christmas Eve - it stems from their European heritage - and others open everything on Christmas Day. We give the kids one present on Christmas Eve, based on my husband’s and my parallel experiences growing up. The present is always (ALWAYS) new pajamas and I hope that tradition carries on to infinity. Wearing cozy new jammies while crawling into bed to wait for Christmas morning is a huge part of the Christmas magic for me.

My husband and I started our own tradition when we had our first Christmas as parents. We fire the kid ((s) now) into bed, put on Christmas music, and exchange presents. It’s a date night in, complete with pretty lights and gifts and it’s a highlight of every year.

  • So far we’ve exchanged gifts when we do our exchange with our friends a few days before Christmas. This will likely change next year when we are married and together on Christmas eve/morning. We agreed to do our holidays the way we have in the past until we are married in March.. then we’ll figure out all the logistics of trying to spend holidays with both families.

  • Growing up, we opened presents and had Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. Bothy parents come from Dutch background, so, yea. Now, we open one on Christmas Eve to keep with my Dutch traditions and the rest on Christmas morning.
