Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Have you read 50 Shades Of Grey?

When I first started hearing about 50 Shades of Grey, my interest was piqued. People were reading it, and talking about how hot it was. I thought it might be a book (or series) to check out once I made it to the end of April, for “research purposes”, of course. (I’m an accountant by day; there is no free time in tax season for reading.)

As the weeks wore on, however, all I heard was how horrible the writing was. People who hopped on the bandwagon quickly jumped off of it, and then everyone’s been linking to the 50 Shades of Suck tumblr blog. There is also the issue of how the “heroine” is (abused, and) portrayed.

I’m choosing not to waste my time, aside from the funny quotes people share on Twitter and Facebook.

Have you read 50 Shades of Grey, or do you plan to?

  • I’m almost finished the last book. So what if people say the writing is horrible? I don’t find it so bad and I’m a very-well read English major who still reads dozens of books a year (including award winners). It’s not going to win a Pulitzer or a Giller award, but it’s never been billed as an award winner. It’s erotica, plain and simple. The first book contains much more erotica than the second and third books. As far as erotica goes, I find it better written than others I’ve read. }:)

I find the characters believable enough and I can relate to them. I’ve read other so-called “well written books” where I couldn’t give a crap about the protaganist. Not sure what that says about me, but for a “beach read” or to curl up with when your brain is fried, it fits the bill!

  • My co-worker just loaned it to me and I plan on starting it this weekend. My friend tells me that it will be very good for my husband. *wink wink*

So yeah, that’s why. Who cares if the writing is bad?

  • i have only barely heard of it. see, FB, twitter, tumblr etc…. absence on that apparently means absence on knowledge of the world. (ha)

i have it on my goodreads list to read. that, along with i think 45 other books.

i don’t know much about it, except that it’s sexy somehow. and, um, all of those books are horribly written. so when i get annoyed by that, i’ll put it down and pick up sporadically.

it can’t be any worse writing than any other of those books you see in the naughty section of your local bookstore… not the ones with pictures, but the ones with titles like “naughty bedtimes stories to read with your partner” truly horrible writing.
i can only imagine a 12yo boy is behind those.
