Committed: The Ties that Bond
with Angella Dykstra
I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.
Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

I am an accountant by day and a writer by night (Do i get a cape?). Because I am a numbers girl, I managed our finances from the beginning of our marriage. Budgets and spreadsheets and mortgage payments, oh my!
Then I went back to work full-time when my husband was working part-time, and I released the reins. Long work days plus an hour commute meant that I simply did not have time to stay on top of everything. He stepped up, and has been on the ball with bill payments and budgets and all of the things a non-accountant only does because he has to. (We have always talked about everything and where we’re at financially, but someone has to do all of the banking/budgeting.)
I’m back working from home and he’s working full-time away from home, so it only makes sense that I take over again. It’s a little odd, because I honestly let that go, so I need to get re-acquainted with all that’s involved.
Who manages the finances in your family?

I do. Always have. I’m the numbers person. We have always talked about everything, though.

We both do. Not the most efficient system.

I do mostly but we still haven’t consolidated all of our bills yet. It’s a work in process. The first year is probably always the toughest as far as name changing and consolidating all of our accounts.

we both do.
over a decade ago, i made a spreadsheet to track myself to get out of the debt i accrued in college. when we got married (almost a decade ago), The Mr. fine tuned our budget to keep track of everything from our wedding expenditures, and house purchase, and our day to day everything.
over the years, this budget has grown to be fairly complicated, because we track every penny- and he travels for work. there’s reimbursements to be had & account for.
we also like to use our credit card (Capital One is AWESOME!!!) to get cash back on everything, so we use it for everything. this adds more fine-tuning of the budget.
now that i stay home, i do the day to day banking & budgeting, and when i’m done matching and plugging in all the numbers, he works his magic to see how much we are spot on.
i wouldn’t have it any other way. it scares me for my friends who are not involved at all in their money situation. that will be a helluva place to start should anything unfortunate happen in the future!
